About The Job:

This position is responsible for the safe operation of drilling equipment to prepare for blasting operations and to extract core samples from the earth's subsurface.

What You'll Do:

1. Equipment Operation





    • Operate the portable rotary drill. Adjust drilling techniques based on soil or rock conditions encountered during drilling.
    • Assist with the drilling pattern layout.
    • Collect and describe stone, sand, and gravel samples.




2. Safety, Health and Environmental Compliance





    • Adhere to safety best practices, protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment.
    • Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) and enforce safety measures among the drilling team.
    • Maintain awareness of surroundings, equipment, and personnel to prevent accidents or hazards.
    • Report any safety concerns, incidents, or equipment malfunctions to the supervisor promptly.
    • Take an active role in prioritizing safety throughout the operation at all times and in accordance with MSHA regulations and Vulcan standards.
    • Follow environmental regulations related to drilling operations and implement measures to minimize environmental impact.




3. Inspection and Equipment Maintenance





    • Perform pre-shift and post-shift inspections and maintenance of drill bits, drill steel, lubricant systems, and fluid levels.
    • Perform minor services, repairs, and adjustments, such as replacing gaskets, filters, and hoses in order to improve drill performance.
    • Report any maintenance needs or equipment issues to the maintenance department.




4. Documentation





    • Enter and maintain information regarding drill logs, drilling reports, and other relevant operational information.




5. Collaboration





    • Work closely with geologists, engineers, plant management and other team members to coordinate drilling activities and achieve objectives.
    • Communicate effectively with team members and onsite personnel.




6. Problem Solving





    • Identify and address issues and challenges encountered during drilling operations and report any concerns or abnormalities promptly.




7. Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Skills You'll Need:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not required.

Experience: Minimum one year experience operating a dredge.

Certifications/Licenses: None required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:





    • Proven experience as a dredge operator in a mining/quarry environment.
    • Familiarity with equipment controls and operation techniques.
    • Strong attention to safety protocols, practices and operation techniques.
    • Physical ability to operate heavy machinery for extended periods.
    • Basic mechanical aptitude to complete a thorough safety and mechanical inspection.
    • Strong sense of spatial awareness to maneuver the loader in tight spaces, around obstacles, and in congested work areas.
    • Good communication skills to effectively interact and coordinate with team members and supervisors.
    • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and adapt to changing work environments.
    • Awareness to digging in water and operating on shorelines.
    • Understands structural and stability limitations of machinery and work environment.




Other Requirements





    • Must be willing to work overtime and travel to different operations depending on company demands.
    • Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions and tolerate being exposed to loud noises.
    • Physical ability to operate heavy machinery for extended periods.

Technical Proficiency: Mastery of drilling equipment operation and maintenance. Knowledge of various drilling techniques and methodologies.

Safety and Environmental Conscious: Commitment to adherence to safety, health and environmental protocols and guidelines. Ability to identify and mitigate potential hazards in the drilling environment. Utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE) and promotion of a safety-first culture.

Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and address challenges or issues during drilling operations. Resourcefulness in finding solutions to unexpected problems.

Attention to Detail: Precision in conducting drilling operations to extract accurate core samples. Thorough documentation of geological data and drilling activities.

Communication Skills: Clear communication with team members, geologists, engineers, and other stakeholders. Effective reporting of drilling progress, issues, and findings.
