Patient Transporter
Job Summary
Employment Duration: 3 months
Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Patient Transporter transports patients to various areas of the Medical Center and/or operates as a patient transport dispatcher. The role is also responsible for transporting patient equipment and other patient-related items in a 24-hour operation, 7 days a week.
The incumbent completes all tasks in accordance with departmental guidelines and University policies and procedures and works collaboratively with dispatchers, supervisors, and management to meet the standards of the Patient Transportation Services department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Transport patients to various areas of the hospital via gurney, bed, crib, or wheelchair.
- Follow Department Standard Work for:
- Patient pick-up
- Patient return
- Patient round-trip
- Discharge
- Transport patients using free-flow oxygen devices such as a mask, cannula, aerosols, and croquettes.
- Transport isolation patients using appropriate attire for patient movement.
- Assist a licensed nurse in connecting and disconnecting traction equipment.
- Assist a licensed nurse or transport RN in transporting patients with I.V. pumps, telemetry, CPO, and trachs.
- Assist a licensed nurse with the movement of I.V. pumps from a bed to a wheelchair or gurney using an I.V. pole.
- Provide age-appropriate assessment and interventions to meet the needs of patients and families served.
- Deliver and pick up specimens, blood, medical equipment, medical records, medications, and other items as required within the Center for Health Sciences (CHS).
- Work collaboratively with patient escorts, nursing staff, physicians, patients, and other hospital personnel.
- Keep the department supervisor or manager informed of problems encountered or unusual situations.
- Maintain departmental equipment and retrieve unused equipment (wheelchairs, gurneys, O tanks, etc.) and return them to the Transport Department.
- Report equipment malfunctions to supervisors promptly.
- Maintain a professional attitude and neat appearance at all times, including displaying hospital identification.
- Follow established department and hospital guidelines for attendance and punctuality.
- Adhere to all hospital and department policies and procedures, including patient safety standards (electrical, mechanical, fire, disaster, and safety procedures).
- Provide customer service to patients, co-workers, physicians, and other departments.
- Ensure the work environment is clean and in compliance with infection control and environmental health and safety standards.
- Keep the dispatcher informed of call status.
- Check patient identification band and chart prior to transport and obtain necessary signatures to ensure patient identity.
- Perform patient transport dispatch duties as assigned.
- Participate in staff development activities and cross-training as required.
- Attend meetings, seminars, required hospital training, and in-services.
- Participate in departmental and hospital performance improvement projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Required Qualifications

- Minimum of six months' relevant work experience.
- Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work effectively within a team.
- Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description.
- Willingness to learn new skills.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition and subtraction).
- Ability to organize and effectively set priorities.
- Ability to carry out duties of a first responder in emergency situations.
- Basic computer skills.
