About the Department
Butner Beef Cattle Field Lab ( BBCFL) is a 1,250 acre research unit located about 50 miles north of campus with a staff of 9.5 FTE. BBCFL serves as a research platform for research on beef cattle including nutrition, physiology, genetics, pest control, pasture management, crop production and related areas. BBCFL serves as a training and demonstration area utilized by graduate student and the general public.

Essential Job Duties
This position serves as the manager of the BBCFL Cow/Calf Division and oversees an expanding herd that currently has approximately 600 head of cattle, including cows, calves, replacement heifers, and bulls. The position will direct the daily activities of 1 - 3 employees, including research technicians, temporary employees, and student employees at any given time.
Key Responsibilities:


  • Research project coordination and data collection: Collaborates with Principal Investigators (PIs) on research design and pasture utilization. Collects biological samples (blood, rumen fluid), forage, and weights while strictly adhering to research protocols

  • Reproduction management: Performs advanced reproductive tasks including artificial insemination (AI), estrus synchronization, and pregnancy determinations.

  • Herd Health Management: Independently monitors nutrition and health. Collaborates with the Vet School to develop and execute vaccination and disease prevention strategies. Mixing and administering vaccines and medications.

  • Calving & Neonatal Care: Oversees the calving process, provides manual assistance (pulling calves) when necessary, and manages all calf processing.

  • Records & Software Management: Maintains accurate cattle registrations via management software and the American Angus Association. Summarizes data for research reports and maintains monthly inventory

  • Facility & Equipment Oversight: Ensures all equipment (scales, AI tools, auto-syringes) is calibrated and repaired. Manages inventory of medicinals and supplies while ensuring all staff follow strict safety protocols

Other Responsibilities

  • Assists with general grounds, fence, building, and equipment maintenance for all of BBCFL. Duties include, but are not limited to, mowing, weed eating, power washing, scraping manure, and general housekeeping.
  • Assists with hay production and corn silage harvest.
  • Assists other units at BBCFL as needed.

Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in agricultural work, specifically related to beef cattle production and animal care
  • Ability to perform artificial insemination and assist with difficult births
  • Experience performing routine cattle herd health procedures.
  • Experience with cattle software programs
  • Experience in general agricultural equipment operation

Required License or Certification

  • Valid Driver's License
  • Pesticide Applicators License, or the ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Beef Quality Assurance Certification, or the ability to obtain within 6 months
