The Opportunity

The Associate Dean of Learning Design & Technology provides strategic leadership in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of innovative learning design and technology initiatives. This role leads a comprehensive portfolio that includes instructional design, curriculum development, and media production, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and future-focused learning experiences.

Working collaboratively with the Dean of Academic Innovation and institutional stakeholders, the Associate Dean drives academic transformation through evidence-based practices, educational research, and emerging technologies. The position plays a critical role in shaping course and program design, advancing digital learning strategies, and supporting the successful launch and sustainability of academic offerings that serve today's diverse learners.

Key Job Functions

Strategic Portfolio Management

  • Lead the development, execution, and ongoing management of a strategic academic portfolio, including new program launches and course refresh initiatives.
  • Use data, quality frameworks, and evaluation methods to assess learning effectiveness and sustainability.
  • Align portfolio initiatives with the university's Academic Strategic Plan.
  • Establish governance, operational workflows, and innovation processes supporting instructional design and learning transformation.

Stakeholder Engagement & Faculty Development

  • Build and sustain frameworks that support faculty engagement and instructional success.
  • Serve as a liaison across colleges and administrative units to coordinate resources and learning solutions.
  • Promote best practices in course design, adaptive learning, and student engagement.
  • Lead cross-functional collaborations and faculty development initiatives.

Supervision & Operational Leadership

  • Provide leadership and oversight of instructional design and media production teams.
  • Supervise, coach, mentor, and evaluate staff performance.
  • Establish unit goals aligned with institutional priorities and ensure operational excellence.

University & Community Engagement

  • Participate in institutional committees, initiatives, and strategic projects.
  • Represent the university at professional meetings, conferences, and events.
  • Support divisional priorities and engage in ongoing professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum & Instruction, Higher Education, Organizational Development, or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in instructional design, learning technology, or academic innovation.
  • Experience in higher education environments required.
  • University teaching experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expertise in curriculum design, instructional design quality frameworks, and digital learning best practices.
  • Experience using data analytics, KPIs, and performance metrics to inform decision-making.
  • Demonstrated success leading course and program design initiatives.
  • Strong supervisory experience, including mentoring and team development.
  • Ability to manage multiple strategic initiatives simultaneously.
  • Experience applying design thinking, agile methods, and project management practices.
  • Knowledge of generative AI and emerging learning technologies.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, administrators, and cross-functional teams.
