Overview

Milliman's Indianapolis Health practice is seeking a Software Developer Intern (Summer 2026) to join our growing Platform team. The Software Developer Intern will support the modernization of the Milliman Access Portal (MAP) during a period of significant architectural and cloud transformation. This role will contribute hands-on development to help migrate the application from a React/Node.js stack to a Blazor Server architecture, while also assisting with related cloud infrastructure updates and other engineering tasks needed to improve scalability, maintainability, and performance while maintaining our high security standards. The intern will work closely with experienced developers and stakeholders to implement features, refactor and test components, troubleshoot issues, and help ensure a smooth transition with minimal disruption to users.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:



  • Support the modernization of the Milliman Access Portal by helping migrate the application from React and Node.js to a Blazor Server (.NET) architecture, including rebuilding UI components and assisting with server-side integration
  • Contribute to refactoring and redesigning key application layers to align with updated architectural patterns
  • Support major cloud infrastructure updates, such as, environment configuration, deployment pipelines, and hosting changes in partnership with the Platform team
  • Implement new features and enhancements, write and maintain automated tests, and participate in manual testing to help ensure a stable transition
  • Troubleshoot defects and performance issues using logs and telemetry
  • Participate in code reviews and document technical changes to improve maintainability and knowledge transfer
  • Support security and compliance-related work as needed
  • Collaborate within an agile team by communicating progress and raising risks or blockers


Qualifications



  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to break down ambiguous tasks and ask clarifying questions
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly and adapt in a fast-changing, high-stakes environment
  • Knowledge of modern web development concepts (HTTP, REST, JSON, authentication/authorization basics, responsive UI)
  • Experience writing or maintaining automated tests (unit and/or integration) and an appreciation for quality and maintainability
  • Commitment to secure coding practices and protecting sensitive data (awareness of common vulnerabilities is a plus)
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document work and collaborate effectively on a cross-functional team
  • Basic knowledge of Gen AI tools, how to utilize AI to enhance productivity, and potential ethical considerations or concerns


Required



  • Currently working toward a Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field of study
  • Understanding of software engineering fundamentals (data structures, debugging, versioning, and basic design patterns)


Preferred



  • Familiarity with source control and team workflows (Git, branching, pull requests, code reviews)
  • Experience with at least one modern front-end framework (React preferred) and JavaScript/TypeScript fundamentals
  • Exposure to .NET/C# development or strong interest and aptitude to learn Blazor Server and the ASP.NET Core ecosystem
  • Basic knowledge of cloud concepts (e.g., Azure or AWS), including deployments, environments, and monitoring/telemetry (coursework or projects acceptable)

The Team

The IndyHealth Platform Team builds and maintains the secure, scalable infrastructure and shared platforms that power our practice's analytical and reporting capabilities. The team designs and operates core systems such as Databricks and the Milliman Access Portal (MAP), ensuring stability, performance, and compliance across all environments. Through cross-collaboration with other IndyHealth teams, the Platform Team develops automation, cloud solutions, and governance frameworks that enable efficient, reliable, and compliant delivery across the practice.

Location

This position is based out of the Milliman office in Indianapolis, IN. Candidates hired into this role must be willing to work onsite full-time.
