GENERAL DESCRIPTION

As a WELDING INTERN you are responsible for assisting in the fabrication and welding of metal parts by cutting rebar, bending rebar, fabricating cages and connections, welding steel, etc.

Pay: $24/Hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Assist experienced fabricators and welders in positioning, aligning, fitting, and welding parts to form complete units or subunits while learning to read blueprints and layout specifications.
  • Support moving parts into position manually or with hoists and cranes under supervision and in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Help lay out and examine metal stock or work pieces to ensure specifications are met.
  • Learn to verify conformance of work pieces using measuring tools such as squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
  • Perform tack welds and basic welds under direct supervision and guidance.
  • Assist with removing high spots and cutting bevels using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches.
  • Support marking bending and cutting lines while learning about stock thickness, shrinkage, and material considerations.
  • Perform basic metal preparation tasks such as hammering, chipping, and grinding under supervision.
  • Assist with setting up face blocks, jigs, and fixtures for fabrication projects.
  • Observe and assist in setting up and operating fabricating machines (brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, drill presses, etc.) while receiving hands-on training.
  • Learn to interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to understand material requirements and task sequences.
  • Assist in straightening warped or bent parts using appropriate tools and equipment with guidance.
  • Support aligning and fitting parts according to specifications using appropriate tools under supervision.
  • Assist in creating simple templates and fixtures as part of skill development.
  • Help mark reference points and transfer measurements to work pieces using standard measuring devices.
  • Support lifting and moving materials and finished products using cranes or other equipment under supervision and proper safety procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and follow all company safety policies and PPE requirements.


EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED



  • Currently enrolled in a welding, fabrication, or related technical program (or recent graduate.
  • Basic knowledge of welding and fabrication processes through coursework or hands-on training
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and technical drawings (with guidance as needed)
  • Familiarity with measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, tape measures, depth gauges, and fixed gauges
  • Willingness to learn, follow instructions, and work safely in a shop environment


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ ADA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS



  • Physically able to lift up to 75 lbs, occasionally
  • Physically able to push, pull, lift, bend, climb, kneel, twist, squat, crawl and use hands/forearms repetitively and frequently
  • Ability to move around for up to 12 hours per day
  • Ability to work from ladders, scaffolding, swing stages and man lifts at various heights frequently

  • Wet, hot, humid, and wintry conditions (weather related) (plant specific)
