What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an R&D Systems Engineer to join our dynamic W93 Systems Design team. In this position you will play a pivotal role in the design, development, and integration of complex systems. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that our program aligns with technical specifications and requirements, driving innovation and excellence in our research and development efforts.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Collaborate with the CAM/Domain Lead to develop, capture, and manage program scope.
  • Work with the Program Integration team to ensure the W93 is unified across all domains.
  • Identify and address data and resource needs across the W93 departments and with both internal and external interfaces to Sandia.
  • Track progress on program commitments to ensure timely completion and recommend corrective actions to leadership if necessary.
  • Partner with PM to define budget and schedules within the department and across the program.
  • Develop proposals and plans to resolve conflicts related to scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Serve as the technical escalation point for PM to address technical questions and issues.
  • Act as the point of contact for the CAM to provide status updates on schedules and address cost variances.
  • Facilitate the capture, review, and tracking of risks to closure for the departments scope.
  • Manage change control processes for the CAM at the program level.
  • Develop plans to address areas of concern in collaboration with Program Leadership.
  • Leverage your technical expertise to assist teams in creating innovative technical solutions to challenges.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. This position will require travel to partner sites (e.g. PX, Navy facilities) for alignment meetings and test activities.

Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent with the ability to obtain Sigma15 access, which may require a polygraph
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Experience with nuclear deterrence programs, including Navy nuclear weapon programs.
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas:
    • Development of project or program scope
    • Integrated schedule management and execution
    • Understanding of program financials
    • Risk management
    • Earned value management
  • Prior experience with the nuclear deterrence development process at the system level.
  • Strong motivation to collaborate with a large integrated systems team while also demonstrating the ability to work independently, showing initiative and leadership in both environments.
  • Ability to plan and implement technical work and prioritize competing requirements to achieve optimal system-level outcomes.
  • Ability to discover, understand, and articulate constraints, options, and path forward.
About Our Team

The W93 Systems Design Department provides the design and technical maturation leadership for the W93/Mk7 Reentry Body and Joint Test Assembly Systems, leveraging the engineering knowledge of our team members to realize compliant and qualified products. We engage with our external design agency partners (LANL, LM Space, AWE, NSC), W93 System Integration Department (2449), and the many internal SNL partners to accomplish this monumental program objective which supports the future viability and effectiveness .

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
