Main Line Health's Nurse Extern Program

Position Summary: As a Nurse Extern at Main Line Health, you will gain hands-on experience in a dynamic clinical environment, supporting our nursing staff and providing exceptional care to patients. This position is designed for nursing students who are looking to enhance their clinical skills and gain valuable experience in preparation for a full-time nursing career. As a Nurse Extern, you will provide direct care to patient in a nursing support position.

Apply to be considered for one of the following procedural units at Bryn Mawr Hospital:

  • Post Anesthesia Care Unit
  • Working hours: 5:30am - 2pm, 10:30am-8pm, 8am-4pm or 12:30pm-9pm
  • Requires a minimum 48 hours biweekly, 2 Monday's and 2 Friday shifts per 4 week scheduled or based on unit needs.
  • One week vacation only during the summer
  • Cardiac Cath Lab
  • Working hours: 6:30am-7:00pm. Work 4 to 8 hours per day. Mon-Fri NO Holidays or weekends
  • Operating Room
  • In this role, you will be knowledgeable in both the operation and care of specialized instruments and equipment used by our Surgical and Anesthesia team. Perioperative Technicians are responsible for positioning, lifting and/or transferring patients as well as cleaning and sterilizing the Operating Room and OR equipment after each procedure. Working hours: 7am to 7pm M-F 4-8 hour shifts
  • Schedule: The Nurse Extern Program is a year-round position (not a summer only role). The hours requirement for Nurse Externs is a minimum of 24 hours per week during the summer after training is completed (June/July/August) and a minimum of 16 hours per month during the fall and spring semesters (September to May).

    Hourly Rate: $18.00 per hour. Nurse Externs who work evening and night shifts are eligible to receive a shift differential. Nurse Externs are merit eligible.

    Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform basic nursing support duties such as taking vital signs, AM/PM care, EKGs, blood glucose monitoring, finger sticks, phlebotomy and more.
  • Document patient information accurately and timely in electronic health records (EPIC).
  • Support patient mobility, comfort, and safety.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Participate in patient care planning and review sessions.
  • Adhere to all hospital protocols and infection control practices.
  • Qualifications:

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited nursing program (Diploma, ASN, or BSN).
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is preferred
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility and availability to work year-round.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing compassionate patient care.

  • Interview format:

  • Qualified applicants will receive a request to complete an On-Demand Video recording request to respond to questions about their interest in and qualifications for the Nurse Extern Program.
  • Candidates who are selected to interview for a Nurse Extern position will connect with a recruiter and schedule a virtual interview with a nurse leader at their preferred campus, based on availability.
  • Virtual interviews will take place between January and February. This is a very competitive program, so the sooner you submit our application and On Demand Video, the better your chances of selection will be.
  • Start dates: Qualified candidates who are offered Nurse Extern positions must be able to start in new employee orientation and complete the Monday-Friday day shift training during one of the following weeks:

  • 4/27/2026 (Monday-Friday)
  • 5/11/2026 (Monday-Friday)
  • 5/26/2026 (Tuesday-Friday due to the holiday)
