Overview The Control Systems Engineering Department within Central Engineering is seeking a Senior Engineer for the Relay Protection, Metering, and Security Engineering group. This role requires a highly motivated professional with demonstrated technical expertise, strong personal accountability, and the ability to exercise sound engineering and business judgment.The Senior Engineer will exhibit advanced analytical skills, a commitment to engineering excellence, and the ability to lead and respond effectively to emergency conditions involving relay protection systems, while promoting a positive work environment aligned with Corporate Values.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Design, specify, and apply relay protection, tele protection, and metering systems for the electric transmission and distribution network, including new substations and equipment and modifications to existing installations. Review schematics, wiring diagrams, and develop and review procurement and technical specifications.
- Perform short circuit analyses, relay coordination studies, and relay setting calculations; develop, maintain, and review relay setting files and records; conduct peer reviews; and provide technical guidance on testing results.
- Coordinate engineering activities with internal design disciplines and with field operations, construction, and testing organizations to ensure timely and successful execution of assignments; proactively communicate status, risks, and issues to supervision.
- Serve as project lead on assigned work, including development of scopes, cost estimates, appropriation requests, and requests for proposals in accordance with Central Engineering processes; support project leads on similar deliverables when not serving as lead.
- Participate in engineering design review meetings and manage external vendor engineering efforts, serving as the primary technical liaison to ensure compliance with company standards and delivery of required design outputs, including relay settings and supporting documentation.
- Provide real time technical support during relay system commissioning, testing, and cut overs, including nights and weekends as required.
- Develop and maintain relay protection documentation to support system operations, regulatory compliance, and permanent engineering records.
- Ensure adherence to all applicable regulatory, reliability, and internal compliance requirements; prepare and maintain compliance documentation; participate in audits; and support responses to regulatory inquiries and interrogatories.
- Represent Con Edison on regional or industry relay protection committees; mentor and train less experienced engineers and provide technical leadership within the group.
- Participate in periodic 24/7 on call coverage to support operating organizations, troubleshoot relay protection issues, and respond to system emergencies.
- Perform other engineering duties and assignments as required.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and eight years of relevant engineering work experience in the application of transmission and/or distribution relay protection systems, or
- Master's Degree with a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering and six years of relevant engineering work experience in the application of transmission and/or distribution relay protection systems.
Relevant Work Experience
- Demonstrated strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot, respond to, and resolve emergency conditions associated with relay protection systems, required.
- Proven ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously while adapting to changing priorities and deadlines, required.
- Strong technical aptitude with excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, required.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate and communicate clearly with peers, supervisors, subordinates, and all levels of management, required.
- Proficiency in standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office, required.
- Handson experience in relay settings development, relay coordination and fault studies, protection logic development, and use of related engineering software tools, required.
- Ability to develop engineering specifications and standards, with working knowledge of applicable industry codes, standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., IEEE, IEC, NERC PRC), preferred.
- Demonstrated project management capability, including successful execution of multidiscipline engineering projects, preferred.

- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
- Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
- Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
- Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be available for travel both regionally and continent-wide, to attend conferences, meetings, etc. as needed.
