What You'll Do

As a structural engineer, the candidate will develop high-quality engineering design packages, including drawings, specifications, and calculations, and provide field support during construction to ensure proper implementation. Responsibilities include preparing conceptual engineering deliverables such as scopes/statements of work, design criteria, man-hour estimates, and bills of material. The engineer will work as a member of an integrated project team and may serve as a technical lead on multi-discipline tasks, collaborating with other disciplines, project engineers, system engineers and other plant stakeholders. The position also requires routinely conducting walkdowns of existing facilities to support the development of accurate design documents and to provide on-site support to construction personnel.



Additional responsibilities include:



  • Structural evaluations, modifications, and rehabilitation of existing facilities
  • Seismic analysis and retrofit design
  • Design support for equipment installations (including floor evaluations)
  • Technical review and oversight of outside engineering firms
  • Preparation of engineering reports



The Structural Engineer must be proficient in developing (and providing oversite of drafting) structural drawings (notes, plans, sections, and details), construction specifications and calculations for reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, and cold-formed steel. The engineer will apply established engineering practices and applicable codes and standards to develop solutions to complex structural problems. Familiarity with applicable consensus design codes and standards is required.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET AND 2 years of relevant experience. OR a Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering. OR a Ph.D. in Civil or Structual Engineering.
  • A Professional Engineering License (PE) is required

  • There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.



    • 3.0/4.0 minimum cumulative GPA for Bachelor degree
    • 3.3 minimum cumulative GPA for Master degree
    • 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA for PhD



  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Preferred Job Requirements

  • Master's degree in Civil (with structural emphasis) or Structural Engineering from Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States
  • Minimum of five years of experience in structural engineering design
  • Structural analysis modeling experience with STAAD.Pro
  • Experience with Microstation drafting software
  • Experience with Revit drafting software

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.


This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which requires successful competition of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
