The Health Physicist Senior develops, implements, and oversees the radiation protection program involving radioactive materials, x-ray devices, and/or non-ionizing radiation, including lasers, and, where applicable, performs duties that support goals and objectives to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction. Working under some supervision, this position ensures that experimental work, equipment, design, or medical procedures conform to radiation safety standards for protection of hospital personnel, patients, and the environment.

Essential Job Function
  • Performs audits of radioisotope, sealed source, brachytherapy, analytical x-ray, and/or laser user facilities.
  • Performs radiation exposure/contamination surveys and evaluates risks and hazards.
  • Collects, handles, and transports radioactive waste material, including the preparation of such material for shipment, burial, incineration, or storage.
  • Maintains inventory of all radioactive material received by or transferred from the hospital.
  • Performs diagnostic x-ray site surveys and inspections.
  • If qualified, performs x-ray device and mammography quality assurance and performance testing.
  • Calibrates and maintains radiological monitoring and analytical equipment.
  • Determines and implements proper packaging, shielding, and labeling in compliance with radioactive material shipping regulations.
  • Implements specific components of the radiation protection program such as dosimetry, microspheres and theranostic therapies, waste, and bioassays.
  • Manages the laser and MRI safety programs.
  • This position serves as the Deputy Laser Safety Officer.
  • Acts as the alternate Radiation Safety Officer when the Radiation Safety Officer is unavailable including conducting radiation safety committees and signing license amendments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
  • Required: Master's degree in physics, health physics, medical health physics, or a closely related science, engineering, or legal discipline. Preferred: Master's degree in health physics or medical health physics

Experience
  • Required: 5 years in health or medical physics or radiation safety; 2 years in a clinical setting

Licensure/Certification/Listing
  • Required: Qualified to perform and submit plan reviews and shielding designs for radiological use areas in compliance with the State of North Carolina; Certified Medical Laser Safety Officer, Certified Laser Safety Officer, Certified Health Physicist, and/or Registered Radiation Protection Technologist
