Assistant Professor of Horn - Tenure Track

The University of Iowa

The School of Music seeks an artist-level performer and teacher of horn committed to leading and cultivating the University of Iowa Horn Studio into a clear position of excellence through engagement with prospective students, current students, faculty, staff, and the broader community.

Job Responsibilities



  • Teach applied lessons at the undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral level in horn
  • Hold weekly studio class
  • Advise graduate students
  • Effectively recruit, retain, and mentor a strong class of undergraduate, MM, and DMA students
  • Create an innovative curriculum for a broad range of students who seek to explore a range of educational opportunities and career pathways
  • Continue to develop and maintain a visible national and international profile as a performer and a pedagogue
  • Participate in faculty governance, attend faculty meetings, and serve on faculty and university committees as appropriate
  • Support recruitment and audition processes, and engage in outreach that strengthens the brass area, ensembles, and the School of Music's profile.
  • Other duties may be assigned within the brass area and/or School of Music.

Education Requirement:

Master's degree in Music in hand by the start date

Required Qualifications:


  • Evidence of successful studio teaching at the university level
  • Potential and shown commitment to recruit and maintain a successful horn studio
  • Significant orchestral, chamber, and/or solo experience at the professional level
  • Evidence of artistry and a growing reputation as a performer.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with faculty colleagues


Desirable Qualifications:


  • Doctorate in Music or equivalent professional experience
  • Evidence of successful recruiting and retaining students
  • Demonstrated teaching and advising graduate (MA & DMA) students
  • Evidence of an established national and/or international reputation as a performer
  • Evidence of creative activity and/or research as demonstrated through activities such as lecture performances and presentations/publications
