The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for an assistant professor or assistant clinical professor of zoological companion animal medicine (ZCAM). The successful candidate will provide services and support required ZCAM clinical year rotations and mentor house officers in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA). In addition, engagement in pre-clinical teaching and engagement in research and scholarly activity is expected. The appointment is a continuous-term (tenure-equivalent) track position. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a highly valued ZCAM program in an academic veterinary hospital with a caseload of nearly 35,000 animals per year. The ZCAM service has a robust clinical and procedural caseload, including zoological companion animals and animals from local zoos and aquaria. The ZCAM service provides referral, emergency, and primary care to a variety of species. The service provides dentistry, soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries, endoscopy, minimally invasive procedures, and collaborates with the multiple services in the hospital to provide high quality patient care. The service provides excellent student teaching and offers an ACZM residency training program. The FHSA has a fully staffed 24/7 emergency service, with faculty with an interest in exotic animals, to which ZCAM also provides back-up specialty support. The FHSA has a full range of specialties that include diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, neurology, cardiology, dermatology, oncology, and ophthalmology. The emergency and critical care service provides 24 hour/7 day a week service and is certified as a Level 1 Trauma Center. Additional features of the Foster Small Animal Hospital include 3.0T MRI, helical 160-slice CT, fully equipped nuclear medicine suite, C-arm fluoroscopy, portable radiography, laparoscopy/arthroscopy, interventional radiology suite, and Varian linear accelerator with cone beam CT, a multi-leaf collimator and stereotactic radiotherapy. Cummings School has research strengths in clinical and translational research, supported by the clinical research shared resource, a clinical trials office, and the comparative pathology and genomics shared resource. Areas of strength include musculoskeletal disease, cardiovascular disease, comparative oncology, urology, and others. There are opportunities to develop independent or collaborative research projects with faculty across Tufts University. The amount of time devoted to research and scholarly activity is determined by the expertise and interests of the faculty and determines the appointment track. All faculty members, including clinical track faculty, are expected to engage in sufficient scholarly activity to ensure they remain current in their discipline. The initial distribution of activity will be 26 - 32 weeks of clinical activity, 4 - 10 weeks of teaching, 4 - 10 weeks of research and scholarly activity, and 2 - 4 weeks of service. The exact distribution of activities will depend on the interests of the successful faculty member and the appointment track. Faculty are initially provided 4 weeks of vacation, plus one week of other time off. The university also recognizes ~12 other holiday days.
