We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer to support high-visibility Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) modernization programs. In this role, you will develop clear, accurate, and compliant technical documentation that enables engineers, operators, and stakeholders to confidently work with mission-critical aviation systems. You will collaborate closely with engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and program managers to translate complex technical information into accessible documentation that supports safety, compliance, and operational excellence across the National Airspace System (NAS). This role is ideal for a writer who enjoys working with advanced technologies and wants their work to have real-world, national impact.

In this position, you will:

    Develop and maintain technical documentation including system manuals, user guides, procedures, training materials, and compliance artifacts

  • Translate complex engineering, cybersecurity, and system concepts into clear, concise, and accurate content

  • Ensure documentation aligns with FAA standards, federal regulations, and program requirements

  • Participate in documentation reviews and audits to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance

  • Collaborate with engineers and program teams to gather requirements and validate technical content

  • Ensure all deliverables meet Section 508 accessibility and FAA branding guidelines

  • Manage documentation schedules and deliverables across multiple workstreams

  • Prepare documentation status updates and readiness materials for program stakeholders

  • Apply industry best practices, tools, and templates to continuously improve documentation quality

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship Required.
  • Must have the ability to obtain / maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience; or Masters degree and 3 years; or Associate's degree and 7 years experience; or HS diploma/equivalent and 9 years experience.
  • Experience producing technical documentation in engineering, IT, or systems-focused environments.

  • Demonstrated experience developing technical manuals, user guides, procedures, and compliance documentation.

  • Ability to translate complex technical information into clear, concise, and accurate content for diverse audiences.

  • Familiarity with documentation standards, style guides, and content management practices.
  • Experience ensuring documentation compliance with federal requirements, contractual standards, or regulated environments.

  • Working knowledge of Section 508 accessibility requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct FAA or NAS configuration management experience.
  • Familiarity with FAA modernization initiatives, NextGen, or National Airspace System (NAS) environments.

  • Experience documenting complex systems, including infrastructure, cybersecurity, or software-intensive programs.

  • Knowledge of NIST frameworks, cybersecurity documentation, or system certification processes.

  • Experience using documentation tools such as MadCap Flare, Adobe FrameMaker, Confluence, SharePoint, or XML-based authoring tools.

  • Exposure to agile or DevSecOps environments.

  • Experience supporting audits, readiness reviews, or compliance documentation.

  • Professional certifications such as Certified Technical Communicator (CTC) or equivalent credentials.

Target Salary Range

$66,000 - $106,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual's experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
