Department Overview

The Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Department consists of a "Delivery" team that develop data science and machine learning solutions.

As a Delivery team, this Department uses industry leading data science and change management practices to drive PG&E's transition to the sustainable grid of the future. The Department works cross-functionally across the company to enable data driven decisions applying analytics, as well as improvements to relevant business processes. Deployed to some of PG&E's highest priority arenas, the Department does not specialize in a traditional utility domain, such as asset management or program administration, but instead specializes in extracting useful insights from disparate datasets and facilitating actions informed by these insights.

Position Summary

PG&E is looking for a senior Data Scientist with experience in Computer Vision delivering data science products end-to-end. In this role, the successful candidates will be uniquely positioned at the forefront of utility industry analytics, having the opportunity to advance PG&E's triple bottom line of People, Planet, and Prosperity. This team works on a wide variety of difficult problems, offering great variety in the work, and constant opportunity to explore and learn. Current and past engagements include:

  • Developing computer vision models that improve, accelerate, and automate grid asset inspections processes
  • Predicting electric Transmission & Distribution equipment failure before it occurs, allowing for proactive maintenance
  • Forming the analytical framework behind PG&E's Transmission Public Safety Power Shutoff

PG&E is providing the full salary/pay range for this position. The actual amount paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, internal equity, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, and geographic location. The range to reasonably expect will be around the minimum and the midpoint$126,000 - $163,000. Thefinal decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to the factors above.This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E's discretionary incentive compensation programs.

Bay Area Min: $ 126,000

Bay Area Max: $ 200,000

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and the Oakland General Office (OGO) based on business needs.

What You'll Do

  • Develop, calibrate, validate, and maintain scalable computer vision ML algorithms to extract intelligence from image-based data.
  • Iterate and incorporate new ML algorithms to continuously improve product performance under a variety of conditions.
  • Identify optimal analytical methods and solutions for algorithm development.
  • Provide insight and recommendations for the architecture design based on information obtained from machine learning algorithms, advanced mathematical models, and business expertise.
  • Create data pipelines to add structure to the resultant data extracted from images, and work to integrate the data into other algorithms and visualization tools and platforms.
  • Provide technical expertise in building an analytics-driven product pipeline.
  • Assess needs and recommend experiments and projects, suggest new algorithmic development, and drive tactical decisions about approaches and data requirements.
  • Collaborate with end-user and product owners to understand computer vision needs.
  • Design and implement methodologies for testing and accuracy assessment.
  • Provide production support for computer vision components.
  • Further the goals and positive, professional image of the Division through effective dealings with customers, stakeholders and other MEPPI divisions.


Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in data science, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Physics, Econometrics or Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Sciences, Statistics, or equivalent field
  • 4 years of experience in computer vision, machine learning, and/or image processing

Desired:

  • Master's degree in data science, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Physics, Econometrics or Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Sciences, Statistics, or equivalent field
  • Advanced software engineering skills and experience with Python programming
  • knowledge of deep learning, including semantic segmentation and object detection
  • Ability to learn, adapt and utilize new technology related to the Power-I Substation Monitoring Platform
  • Advanced interpersonal, communications and presentation skills
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Office products to prepare reports, analysis and schedules
  • Experience with handling large datasets and cloud computing platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP, or other enterprise level analytics platforms
  • Experience turning business needs into technical requirements, and structuring developments, analysis and validation plans to meet requirements
  • Relevant industry experience (electric or gas utility, EV charging infrastructure, Vehicle-Grid integration, distributed energy resources, analytics consulting, etc.)
