Position Number 48LS20263
Position Type Temporary
Essential Job Duties
Counselor
Salary
Anticipated Hiring Range: $700-$1,450 per camp week. Compensation varies based on the camp program and position assigned. Detailed information regarding compensation rates was provided during the mandatory Counselor & Teaching Assistant Information Session in February.
Primary Purpose of Position
While all Design Camp staff have a strong impact on the lives of our pre-college students, and potential future designers, counselors have the unique opportunity to inspire students by working with them around the clock. They will work with students in a variety of scenarios and on different projects, as well as help them to make connections between their personal experiences and the path towards becoming a designer.
Counselors are responsible for supervising their group of students at all times, and act as a mentor and leader during studio activities, team outings and presentations. In addition to being a mentor to the students, counselors also work with instructors and teaching assistants to help facilitate learning during each studio project. Counselors must take an active role in the studio environment by having a good understanding of the projects that students are working on and be able to provide feedback throughout the process.
During each week of camp, counselors are required to present a project of their own that they have completed during their time as an NC State College of Design student. Not only are counselors a mentor to pre-college students who are interested in design, they are also representing the College of Design and their studio discipline.
Before campers arrive and after they leave, counselors work with fellow Design Camp staff to clean up and prepare camp facilities. Counselors are also responsible for leading campers during group activities.
Counselors must maintain a positive, professional, and encouraging mentor relationship with campers at all times.
Residential Design Camp counselors are expected to stay on campus in a residence hall and be available 24/7 during the week of camp and be responsible for camper supervision at all times.
Support Staff
Salary
Anticipated Hiring Range $650 - $800 per camp week. Compensation varies based on the camp program and position assigned. Detailed information regarding compensation rates was provided during the mandatory Counselor & Teaching Assistant Information Session in February.
Primary Purpose of Position
All Design Camp staff have a strong impact on the lives of our campers (and future designers!),
support staff have the unique opportunity to work with all the staff and campers. They are there to
enhance the experience of Design Camp for campers and all staff by assisting in ensuring the smooth
functioning of Design Camp.
Support staff work directly with lead staff to assist with administrative tasks by supporting counselors, instructors and teaching assistants. They are trained as counselors in addition to their administrative role to be prepared to step into a counselor role if there is a sudden change in availability. They take an active roll in ensuring that Design Camp is running smoothly and are very adaptable staff members.
They must maintain a positive, professional, and encouraging relationship with campers and fellow staff, by taking an active role in supporting the logistics of Design Camp. In addition, support staff work with fellow camp staff to prep and clean up camp facilities, aid staff in their roles by helping with daily tasks, managing materials, and ensuring camper safety. Support staff must be flexible and adaptable to meet the evolving needs of the Design Camp environment.
In the event that a support staff needs to adjust to a counselor role due to a sudden change in
availability their day to day schedule will shift to the counselors and their pay will adjust accordingly.
Due to this precaution we ask that support staff keep their week as open as possible. This is especially
important in the case of residential camps where counselors are expected to be available
Teaching Assistant
Salary
Anticipated Hiring Range $660 - $750 per camp week. Compensation varies based on the camp program and position assigned. Detailed information regarding compensation rates was provided during the mandatory Counselor & Teaching Assistant Information Session in February.
Primary Purpose of Position
Teaching Assistants (TAs) are assigned to a specific studio and assist camp instructors with studio instruction, project critiques, classroom management, and helping make transitions between studio activities as smooth as possible. TAs support instructors and campers by assisting with studio preparation and facilitating project work during camp sessions, as well as helping monitor and manage project supplies throughout the week.
Preparation work will be completed after May training and prior to the assigned camp week or weeks, and all prep tasks must be finished before the start of each camp week. TAs are expected to be available to complete up to 10 hours of preparation work per camp week, in addition to fully participating in required Camp Prep Days. Preparation tasks and approximate hours will be discussed collaboratively between Design Lab staff, the instructor, and the TA during May training, documented in advance, and tracked throughout the summer. Prep work hours are factored into the lump-sum compensation. If preparation work exceeds 10 hours per camp week, additional hours will be compensated through an end-of-summer bonus.
During camp sessions, TAs work directly with campers to support learning and help them practice design skills, techniques, and ways of thinking relevant to the studio focus and projects. TA'ing is a great opportunity for anyone interested in or curious about teaching.
