The Position

2026 Summer Intern - Clinical Pharmacology

Department Summary

Clinical Pharmacology is a dynamic function that plays a critical role in supporting drug development teams and in optimizing the dosing regimen for patients. Utilizing our expertise in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, Clinical Pharmacologists contribute at every stage of development, applying quantitative pharmacology principles across a molecule's life-cycle for both small molecules, biologics, and novel treatment modalities. The Clinical Pharmacology department is instrumental in shaping future treatments and ensuring they are both safe and effective.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, CA, on-site.

The Opportunity

The key responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Data Integration: Clean and curate longitudinal Phase III COPD data, including daily patient diaries (symptoms/rescue med use), frequent spirometry (FEV1), and inflammatory biomarkers.

  • Model Development: Develop and implement Repeated Time-to-Event (RTTE) models to describe the frequency and timing of COPD exacerbations.

  • Dynamic Predictor Analysis: Evaluate the impact of time-varying covariates (e.g., weekly symptom changes) vs. baseline characteristics in predicting the "hazard" of an event.

  • Simulation: Conduct "Virtual Patient" simulations to quantify how different treatment effects impact the cumulative risk of exacerbations over a 52-week period.

  • Strategic Insight: Communicate findings to cross-functional teams (Clinical Science, Biostatistics) to help refine future trial designs and patient selection criteria.
