Postdoctoral Fellow - AI/ML for Immunology, Vander Heiden Lab

Genentech
United States, California, South San Francisco
Jan 28, 2026
The Position

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in the Vander Heiden Lab of the Biological Research AI Development (BRAID) group within the AI for Biology & Translation (AIBT) Department. BRAID/AIBT is an innovation center focused on developing and applying novel AI/ML approaches to biological data.

You will focus on training and applying AI/ML models to questions in adaptive immunity, such as classification of patient immune set points, inferring immunological history from adaptive immune receptor receptors (AIRR), and understanding B and T cell repertoire dynamics in health and disease. You will also work closely with colleagues in the Immunology Discovery department to identify opportunities to generate meaningful training data and collaborate on applications of the methods developed during the postdoc's tenure.

The Opportunity:

  • Work closely with computational colleagues to build, train, and evaluate cutting edge AI/ML models to investigate immune states across health and disease.

  • Focus on innovation and exploratory AI/ML research within a data-rich environment.

  • Technical and scientific mentorship from computational and experimental colleagues.

  • Present at external scientific conferences and publish insights in high-impact journals.

Who You Are:

  • Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or Machine Learning related field

  • Proficiency with multiple AI model architectures (e.g., transformers, MIL, GANs, GNNs) and explainability frameworks (e.g., integrated gradients).

  • Experience with both analysis and computational method development for single-cell RNA-seq and AIRR-seq (BCR or TCR).

  • Experience with python, machine learning libraries, version control, containerization, and high-performance compute environments.

  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate complex AI/ML approaches to both computation and experimental audiences.

  • A history of high-impact, first-author publications in AI/ML, bioinformatics, or immunology topic areas.

  • Independent, highly motivated, and highly collaborative with the ability to work together with multi-disciplinary teams of computational and experimental scientists.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $110,000 to $120,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
