SUMMARY

The primary role of the Professional Standards Legal Assistant is to assist the Chief of Professional Standards, including processing and responding to records requests, coordinating and preparing for continuing education events and presentations, and assisting to prepare criminal cases for trial. The Professional Standards Legal Assistant works closely with the First Assistant District Attorney and all Deputy District Attorneys but, in particular, the Chief of Professional Standards. This position requires legal education and/or experience to successfully execute the duties of this job.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Receiving and processing records requests, including requests made pursuant to Right to Know and the Crime Victim Right of Access; monitoring statutory deadlines; invoicing the requestor and documenting status of payment; gathering, reviewing, and summarizing requested materials; redacting records; copying video; documenting actions, inputting information into request databases; confirming status and response with the Chief of Professional Standards; conveying materials to the requestor; documenting actions.
  • Answering phones; documenting phone messages; communicating in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Assist the Chief of Professional Standards with coordinating meetings, events, and continuing education trainings for the District Attorney's Office and law enforcement in Montgomery County; preparing PowerPoint presentations and other presentation materials.
  • Assisting Deputy District Attorneys with the preparation of criminal cases for trial as needed; coordinating with witnesses; assisting with travel and accommodation arrangements; conveying discovery; issuing subpoenas; and preparing trial exhibits.
  • Assisting the Chief of Professional Standards, First Assistant District Attorney, and Deputy District Attorneys with other tasks and projects as needed.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Associates Degree or Bachelor's Degree.
  • Paralegal certificate is a plus, but not required.
  • 1-2 years college-level course work in a criminal justice or related field.
  • Typing & computer skills.
  • Strong computer skills are preferred but must at least be proficient with Apple products and programs and Microsoft Office programs such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, research and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of departmental structure & mission.
  • Excellent skills, both written and verbal.
  • The ability to work independently, problem solve, plan and prioritize.
  • Legal research skills are helpful, but not required.
