Summary of Position In response to the expansion of additive manufacturing applications and markets in recent years, ASTM International established the Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE). Through collaboration among industry, government, and academia, the AM CoE addresses the need for industry standards. It achieves this goal through world-class advisory services, publications, workforce development, and other education and training activities that help expand and mature the AM industry. In 2021, ASTM International acquired Wohlers Associates (WA), an AM advisory group and market intelligence firm. WA provides technical, market, and strategic advisory services on the new developments and trends in rapid product development and AM. For 31 years, WA has published the Wohlers Report, an undisputed industry-leading publication on 3D printing. We are seeking a talented Additive Manufacturing (AM) Associate Data Scientist to join our team. This role, under the umbrella of ASTM International's Advanced Manufacturing Programs Division, demands an adaptive and independent individual. The Associate Data Scientist will support WA and ASTM International in advancing market intelligence capabilities for the AM and other emerging technologies. This role focuses on data exploration, market intelligence tool support, and rapid experimentation with AI-enabled solutions. The individual will help bridge industry expertise with emerging technologies by supporting MVP development, AI tool evaluation, data collection and consolidation, and data-driven reporting initiatives. The responsibilities of this pivotal role include, but are not limited to: Data Collection & Orchestration including but not limited to collecting and organizing data from multiple sources, creating data pipelines for scheduled pulls, and supporting database organization and data workflows Data Processing & Analysis including but not limited to cleaning, normalizing, and preprocessing datasets, performing exploratory analysis, and supporting report generation AI & Market Intelligence Support including but not limited to prototyping MVPs using AI/LLM tools, evaluating AI tools for feasibility, cost, and performance, and supporting development of new market intelligence products Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors Support project scoping, prioritization, and documentation Support or lead the analysis, visualization, and documentation of all WA data and deliverables. Work with relevant stakeholders to analyze emerging trends and competitive opportunities for AM and beyond. Support the identification of key technology drivers and challenges relevant to WA and ASTM International. Support the development and execution of ASTM International's events Please note that travel will be required for this position (up to 25%). Minimum Qualifications* Bachelor's or master's degree in engineering 2 years of prior experience required Familiarity with Python, R, and Microsoft Excel for data analysis and preprocessing. Foundational understanding of data engineering concepts, databases, and data pipelines. Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS or equivalent cloud technologies. Basic familiarity with big data or distributed tools is a plus. Understanding of LLMs and AI tools, including evaluation, comparison, and applied use cases. Familiarity with project management tools such as Jira or Asana is preferred. Strong analytical and critical thinking Ability to understand and clearly communicate requirements with vendors and stakeholders Attention to detail and curiosity Ability to work in a fast-paced, experimental environment Clear written and verbal communication Ability to take initiative to solve real world problems and suggest end to end solutions. Can-do attitude and independent decision-making abilities Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive organizational information Highly dependable, reliable, responsible, responsive, and independent individual who is flexible and adaptive Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in engineering Experience as a Data scientist, Data Analyst, Consultant, or similar analytical role Technical experience in or familiarity with additive manufacturing Ability to translate technical capabilities into clear value propositions for customers. Experience in product management or platform strategy for digital data products.
