Position Overview
The Center for Certification and Competency-Based Education, C3Be, a center within the Achievement and Assessment Institute and the University of Kansas, seeks an Instructional Designer to design competency-based learning experiences and assessment activities. The Instructional Designer will support faculty in the design of learning modules for competency-based education programs and offerings, in collaboration with C3Be colleagues and partners for the development and delivery of the programs using the Canvas LMS. Jayhawk Global is an education innovation center that advances and delivers non-traditional forms of learner engagement, including online degree programs, professional and workforce development, certifications, competency-based educational offerings, credit for prior experience, employee training, and enrichment learning.

Jayhawk Global's mission is both internal, working collaboratively with all KU academic schools and departments, and external, serving all 105 Kansas counties, 50 U.S. states, and over 40 countries. The units in Jayhawk Global include: C3BE, Jayhawk Online & Jayhawk Flex, Extended Learning (including the Aerospace Short Course Program, Conferences & Noncredit Courses, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute), the Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute, and the Center for Online & Distance Learning.

Job Description
50% - Learning Design & Development:
  • Collaborate with faculty to design and build engaging, effective, high-quality competency-based education online learning modules for delivery in the Canvas learning management system.
  • Enhance module content with multimedia technologies that support teaching and learning in the Canvas learning management system.
  • Support faculty in designing or adapting learning materials to ensure alignment with Jayhawk Flex Design Standards.

50% - Implementation and Production:
  • Upload learning materials and assessments into Canvas, adapting blueprint template as needed.
  • Work with Digital Media Specialists and other campus partners, such as KUIT Educational Technologists, to implement and facilitate the use of technologies that support teaching and learning in the Canvas learning management system.
  • Conduct quality and accessibility reviews of learning modules and support revisions as needed to meet Jayhawk Flex Design Standards.

Position Requirements
Position is expected to have an on-site presence, but remote/hybrid arrangements will be considered for highly-qualified applicants.

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in instructional design, curriculum & instruction, educational technology, or related field.
  2. 2 years of experience designing or facilitating teaching & learning experiences for adult learners and/or within higher education
  3. Experience designing learning experiences for online/asynchronous delivery
  4. Experience applying universal design and accessibility principles in education
  5. Experience working with a variety of teaching and learning technologies such as Adobe products, Articulate360, Canvas, Microsoft Teams, Office 365, VoiceThread, Zoom etc.
  6. Ability to work collaboratively and creatively in a deadline-driven environment as evidenced by application materials and interview process.
  7. Ability to manage multiple projects at different stages, while meeting deadlines and quality standards as evidenced by application materials and interview process
This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Advanced degree in instructional design or educational technology.
  2. Experience with Canvas Credentials and/or DesignPLUS course design tools
  3. Experience with competency-based educational program design & instruction
  4. Experience with active learning pedagogies and/or assessment approaches such as Project Based Learning (PBL), performance assessments, evidence-centered assessment design, portfolios,
  5. Experience with design thinking methods and iterative design processes, particular backwards design
  6. Prior experience in the understanding of higher education environment and working successfully with university faculty and/or subject matters as evidenced in application materials.
  7. Experience collaborating with remote colleagues as evidenced in application materials or interview process.
