Overview

The Commercial Real Estate (CRE) credit team is tasked with managing the real estate credit risk for Deutsche Bank's Commercial Real Estate Group. As a Director and Team Head, you will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight to a team of Risk Officers handling approvals for all real estate-related transactions retained on the balance sheet; your remit will include defining team objectives, ensuring robust risk management frameworks are in place, and fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.

You will lead your team in setting and monitoring counterparty credit limits, rating, Fed Classification and negotiating term sheets, reviewing due diligence and underwriting, and interfacing with senior management, business unit, internal and external regulators and other key stakeholders. You will be expected to provide expert guidance, propose risk-mitigating structures and final recommendations for approvals/declines, or new loan terms for proposed commercial real estate transactions involving stabilized, transitional, bridge, ground-up construction, conversions, and acquisition/rehabilitation and special situation transactions.

The Director will serve as a senior intermediary between the Business units, department heads, and credit committees, ensuring optimal risk/return outcomes are achieved; this role also entails directing the monitoring of portfolio and individual transactions, financial/market developments within commercial real estate and related sectors, providing strategic insights, and overseeing internal and external audit coordination for the team.

What You'll Do

  • Strategic Oversight of Credit Approvals:Lead and oversee the team's analysis and recommendation process for credit approvals/declines, or new loan terms for proposed commercial real estate transactions. Ensure consistency with Deutsche Bank's risk appetite and policies, act as a senior liaison between the Business units, department heads, and internal and external regulators, representing the Structured Solutions Sales Group (SSG) Portfolio

  • Portfolio and Market Risk Management:Direct the monitoring of the CRE portfolio and financial/market developments within commercial real estate and related sectors, providing strategic insights and developing proactive response to key risk indicators. Oversee the assessment and recommendation for the SSG portfolio, including construction, transitional and special situations loans

  • Due Diligence and Strategy Alignment:Oversee interaction with internal Business unit personnel to prepare credit reports and due diligence documentation that supports Deutsche Bank's Business strategies while operating within the constraints of Deutsche Bank's risk appetite for commercial real estate

  • Portfolio Performance and Risk Mitigation:Direct the monitoring of the existing portfolio, sponsor/guarantor financial capacity, watchlist and any distressed exposures. Ensure timely preparation of impairment analyses, UTP assessment, and guide the team in structuring transactions to achieve optimal risk/return outcomes and propose risk-mitigating structures

  • Data Integrity and System Enhancement:Ensure data integrity for all names/transactions in Deutsche Bank internal systems (GCRS, LLP Tool, dbCover etc.) and lead Credit Risk Management (CRM) - CRE's interactions with internal/external auditors, regulatory authorities, and other Deutsche Bank infrastructure teams (Finance, Regulatory, Risk Analytics, etc.)

  • Audit and Regulatory Leadership:Provide senior leadership during internal and external audits, ensuring comprehensive analysis and responses to queries, and leading presentations as required

  • Team Leadership and Development:Provide strong leadership, guidance, and mentorship to junior and senior team members, fostering their professional growth and expertise in commercial real estate fundamentals

  • Strategic Direction:Set clear objectives and strategic priorities for the SSG CRM team, ensuring alignment with departmental and bank-wide goals

  • Process Improvement:Drive continuous improvement in team processes, analytics, and reporting capabilities

Skills You'll Need

  • Extensive relevant commercial real estate experience

  • Extensive commercial real estate credit experience, with a proven track record in a leadership role

  • Significant balance sheet lending experience, including transitional and special situation transactions

  • Demonstrated ability to strategically analyze and review highly structured loans

  • Extensive experience leading interactions with internal and external auditors and regulatory bodies

Expectations

It is the Bank's expectation that employees hired into this role will work in the New York office in accordance with the Bank's hybrid working model.

The salary range for this position in New York City is $170,000 to $308,000. Actual salaries may be based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's skill set, experience, education, work location and other qualifications. Posted salary ranges do not include incentive compensation or any other type of remuneration.
