Introduction

MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour.

Required Documents:



  • Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
  • Cover letter stating interest in position.
  • Resume.


Eligibility Requirements



  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2026/2027 school year.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.


Candidates are required to submit the Online Internship Application, cover letter, resume and letter of recommendation through MWRD's Online Employment Center.

Description:

The Information Technology Department of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (the District) is seeking an intern to support the Security Operations team. Under the guidance of a Security Operations staff member, the intern will assist with the following responsibilities:




  • Review and update asset inventory records



  • Conduct software and hardware vulnerability analyses and support security investigations



  • Prepare reports identifying systems that require software updates



  • Verify and validate systems after software updates are applied



  • Develop content for employee email communications and security awareness assessments



  • Analyze log files and prepare summary reports for management



  • Create and edit network and system diagrams



  • Attend section meetings and document notes/minutes



  • Participate in incident response planning and assist with updating related documentation



  • Review technical documentation for accuracy and needed revisions



  • Collaborate with supervisors, team members, and external partners



  • Contribute to the development of the internal technical wiki and documentation library



  • Support tasks and projects aligned with the District's cybersecurity initiatives and goals




Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

* Strong communication skills.

* Ability to collaborate effectively across
departments, throughout the agency, and with external partners.

* Solid technical understanding of
information systems and the ability to identify security and compliance issues.

* Familiarity with operating systems,
identity and access management (IAM), and cloud platforms (Windows, Linux,
Active Directory, Entra).

* Experience with system architecture,
network environments (LAN/WAN), and patch management processes.

* Knowledge of cybersecurity tools,
practices, and frameworks.

* Demonstrated aptitude for troubleshooting
and problemsolving, with a resourceful and analytical approach.

Educational Requirements:

Applicants must be a current graduate or undergraduate student seeking a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or Cybersecurity.
