Clinical Laboratory Team Lead

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Supervises and coordinates clinical laboratory staffing and operations. Ensures optimal patient care standards through daily interaction and role modeling. Supports and facilitates a respectful and collaborative relationship between medical staff, hospital staff and laboratory staff. Maintains quality control of processes and product inventory used in phlebotomy and data control.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Responsible for training, supervising, coaching, mentoring, retraining and evaluating staff.

3. *Serves as operational leader resource, supports and directs both technical and phlebotomy staff with issue resolution and general operations management.

4. *Works as a member of the phlebotomy workgroup as needed.

5. *Serves as expert resource to laboratory staff concerning operational and phlebotomy processes and data control procedures as needed.

6. *Performs blood collection from adult, children and infant patients using appropriate capillary collection or venipuncture technique from hospital inpatients and outpatients.

7. *Demonstrates competency in inpatient as well as outpatient processing workflows including, standing orders, treatment series, transplant, in-reach and outreach patient processes and reconciliation practices.

8. *Demonstrates competency in accurate computer entry of patient demographic and testing information including phlebotomy specimens collected by laboratory or other hospital staff.

9. Assists Laboratory leadership with clinical staff scheduling to ensure coverage for all required areas.

10. Informs and escalates issues and concerns, as appropriate.

11. Works collaboratively with technical staff leadership and tech-in-charge to ensure proper coordination of care; escalates issues to pathologist on call as appropriate.

12. *Works independently to complete all assigned tasks accurately and timely, adhering to all laboratory standards, workflows, policies and procedures.

13. Answers telephone calls and responds to non-technical questions from clinical staff and/or patients as needed.

14. Participates in laboratory quality assurance and quality improvement activities as directed.

15. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

16. Participates in and/or leads meetings, committees, strategic planning and lean projects as assigned.

17. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of clinical phlebotomy methods and procedures.

2. Knowledge of all clinical laboratory policies and technical and procedural changes.

3. Knowledge of performance improvement, budgetary and financial methods and practices.

4. Knowledge of management and leadership principles and practices.

5. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

6. Skill in conflict diffusion and resolution.

7. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

8. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.

9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

10. Ability to make operational and management decisions in response to changing conditions.

11. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.

12. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

13. Ability to provide on-the-job training in laboratory sample collection.

14. Ability to develop written policies and procedures, memoranda and performance evaluations with measurable behaviors.

15. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

16. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associate's degree or two (2) years progress towards a bachelor degree preferred. Minimum of two (2) years phlebotomy experience required within the last five (5) years required.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or Phlebotomy Certification (PBT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

(DOT) - Characterized as light work requiring exertion up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to distinguish and discriminate between colors.
