The Position

2026 Summer Intern - Protein Sciences, Bioengineering

Department Summary

As part of the Drug Discovery organization in Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED), the mission of the Protein Sciences Department is to positively impact and accelerate our Genentech and Roche-wide vision to develop the next generation of medicines for patients. We do this by collaboratively leveraging our combined expertise in Protein Engineering & Production, Structural Biology, and Next Generation Therapeutics. This allows us to design, generate and characterize superior proteins and therapeutic molecules of ever-increasing complexity, thereby providing a competitive advantage to gRED.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • We are seeking a motivated intern to contribute to a high-priority project within our Bioengineering group.

  • This role focuses on the intersection of molecular tool development and advanced cell engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Molecular Engineering: Support the design and preparation of engineered proteins encoded by nucleic acid templates for targeted genomic integration.

  • Analytical Characterization: Utilize biochemical and biophysical assays to ensure the quality and structural integrity of molecular components.

  • Cellular Engineering: Assist in the cultivation and engineering of primary mammalian cells using state-of-the-art delivery platforms and gene-editing technologies.

  • Biological Assessment: Perform molecular and cellular assays (including qPCR and flow cytometry) to evaluate cellular responses and engineering efficiency.

  • Data Synthesis: Analyze and present complex datasets to cross-functional teams to drive project decisions.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are

Required Education

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must have recently attained a Master's Degree with thesis.

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors: Molecular/Cellular Biology, Bioengineering, Immunology, Protein Engineering, or a related experimental discipline.

Required Skills:

  • Expertise in wet-lab skills including but not limited to molecular cloning, mammalian cell culture, gene editing, cell engineering, flow cytometry, data analysis.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or successful coursework in molecular biology, mammalian cell culture, and gene-editing workflows is a strong plus.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Motivated, collaborative, self-directed individual who is excited about developing new cell based therapeutics in an industry setting.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location ofCalifornia is $40.00-$46.00 hour.Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
