The Gould School of Law is currently seeking a Law Librarian I, Emerging Technology and Archives Librarian. This person will be instrumental in making the library a leader in emerging technologies and expanding the archives program. This is a full-time, continuing appointment position. Continuing appointment-track law librarians are expected to participate in scholarship, professional service activities, and pursue meaningful professional development that supports their currency and continued growth in their professional field. This position reports to the library director who supervises all law librarians.

Emerging Technology

  • Develop instruction and programming focusing on artificial intelligence and legal technology that supports the USC Gould School of Law's mission.

  • Create instructional modules in a variety of formats, including creating and maintaining research guides and tutorials in the law library's online collection.

  • Evaluate new artificial intelligence and legal technology products and services, recommend adoption of products and services, and serve as a local expert for faculty and students.

  • Leverage innovative and emerging technologies for library and law school use, assisting law faculty with using these tools to enhance classroom and experiential learning or the scholarly communications experience.

  • Collaborate with colleagues on special projects and provide expertise to support the library's overall mission and services.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Archives

  • Responsible for the management and development of the law archives, including the access, digitization, and preservation of historical print, born-digital objects, artifacts, photographs, and audio/video materials.

  • Organize and catalog archival holdings in a manner consistent with archival standards, determining the appropriate level and type of arrangement and description needed.

  • Perform original and copy cataloging of archival materials in multiple formats using MARC21, RDA, LCSH, LC classification, and other relevant standards.

  • Maintain an electronic inventory, register, or other finding aid for archival holdings.

  • Develop and implement appropriate preservation and conservation procedures for archival materials.

  • Coordinate the copying, digitization, or reformatting of archival materials for preservation and access.

  • Develop and keep current written procedures and manuals related to archival processes.

  • Provide archive research services and assistance to library patrons.

  • Develop displays containing the archival holdings.

  • Keep current on contemporary standards, procedures, and practices related to archival processes.

  • Supervise and train employees involved in physical processing tasks such as labeling, barcoding, and item preparation.

  • Complete other cataloging duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited program is required.

  • Minimum five years' experience working primarily with archival materials, specifically cataloging using the III Sierra and OCLC, as well as maintaining the library's archives web page using CONTENTdm.

  • Minimum five years' supervisory experience.

  • Ability to plan, implement and/or coordinate projects.

  • Ability to develop programs and initiatives that cultivate awareness of the library's archival collection and services.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including listening, speaking, and writing.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills with meticulous attention to detail.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as a positive team player.

  • Must be willing to work in-person, on holidays, evenings, and weekends.

Key Skills

  • A strong sense of initiative and the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new and emerging technologies.

  • Strong project management and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of digital preservation standards and best practices.

  • Instructional design skills

  • Analytical skills, including the ability to interpret data and resource usage.

The annual base salary range for this position is $75,000 - $80,000.
