About the Job

Research Description:

The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities invites applications for a post-baccalaureate researcher position in the field of multi-messenger searches with Prof. Michael Coughlin. The appointment start date is flexible, but June 1, 2026 would be preferred. The appointment is for one year, with possibility of renewals depending on availability of funding. The research would focus on searches for gravitational waves with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), as well as optical counterparts with the Zwicky Transient Facility and Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time, which are time-domain optical surveys to study the transient night sky photometrically. Specifically, we are seeking those interested in work on production, real-time software, participating in our analysis of ground-based telescope and gravitational-wave data to study multi-messenger, transient objects by building filtering pipelines in coordination with frontend Javascript/React.js interfaces.

Job Duties
80%: Research in the development and application of real time data science algorithms for astrophysics
10%: Communicate and coordinate with other personnel involved in the research, including those from non-computing disciplines
10%: Prepare and create research plots, presentations (poster and/or oral talk) and research papers
Other duties of a similar scope as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:
B.A./B.S. in Physics, Astronomy, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field OR a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years
Background in astrophysics, high-energy physics or data analysis
Experience with-or a strong motivation to rapidly learn-machine learning techniques, particularly for real-time or large-scale data processing

Preferred:
Proficiency in Python and familiarity with Rust or other modern programming languages
Experience with data science, machine learning, statistical modeling, and real-time analysis frameworks
Experience working within collaborative coding environments, version control systems, and team-based software development workflows
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing scientific documentation, talks, or reports
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across interdisciplinary teams
Enthusiasm for learning new computing platforms, tools, and technologies

Pay Range: $20.60 - $25.75/hr ($42,848 - $53,560 annually); depending on education/qualifications/experience
