Business Intelligence Analyst

Job Summary: The Enterprise Data Services (EDS) team is seeking a highly curious and growth-oriented individual who is passionate about delivering data products that drive organizational strategic decision-making and surpassing expectations of the end-users. The Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst performs a variety of project-oriented tasks to support the information needs of the organization. This position is responsible for all phases of reporting, decision support, and data analysis activities including report design, measure development, data collection, summarization, and validation. The Business Intelligence Analyst exercises independent judgment and discretionary decision making related to managing multiple and more complex reporting projects. The Business Intelligence Analyst is proficient with analytical and reporting tools, database development, ETL processes, query languages, and database and spreadsheet tools. This position is also responsible for training and mentoring other data specialists and analysts. The Business Intelligence Analyst will participate in reporting and presentations to various levels of management and staff and may also be included in action plan development.



Job Responsibilities



  • Completes all work specific related to complex report requests, interviewing report requestor, understanding the needs/goals of the report, completing data queries, analyzing, and summarizing data and presenting the final report in a small or large group setting to discuss and clarify data.
  • Utilizes programming tools to assist in data extraction from multiple data sources and transformation to support to create usable and reportable formats for final presentation and to make reporting more efficient and timelier.
  • Determines the appropriate analysis technique(s) and method(s) to present data that addresses the report goal(s) and/or question(s).
  • Creates queries, data forms and reports for the reporting applications.
  • Understands and utilizes query languages that support the reporting tools. Enhances the capability of current reporting tools by developing programs using SQL.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of data through review of existing data to identify missing/incomplete data anomalies in a focused quality assurance process: Proactively takes the lead in developing data QA processes, identifying and resolving data issues and problems. Validates report accuracy via auditing prior to distribution. Collaborate with other applicable areas of the organization to correct the data. Works closely with report requestor, IT Data Load Team, Application Team, and operational staff to understand data flow for reporting purpose accuracy. Identify missing/incomplete data anomalies. Develops data QA processes, identifying and resolving data issues and problems. Validates report accuracy via auditing prior to distribution. Collaborate with other applicable areas of the organization to correct the data. Works closely with report requestor, IT Data Load Team, Application Team, and operational staff to understand data flow for reporting purpose accuracy.
  • Mentoring and training Data Specialists and Data Analysts in data processes, structures, tools, tuning report run performance, and steps for validation.
  • Utilizes project management knowledge and skills for assigned departmental project; establishing timelines, tasks, follow up items and communication to ensure all tasks activities are completed within the project needs. Participates in other departmental project activities and tasks to ensure successful completion of project, data collection, data management, communication, and data reporting.
  • Completes all tasks required for the position, as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.



Required Education, License/Certification and Experiences



  • Resident of WI
  • Associate's degree or above in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science/MIS Engineering or closely related field required
  • At least one to three (1-3) years of experience in:

    • Enterprise Data Warehousing (EDW)
    • Speaking to technical people in this industry and understand what a Data Warehousing application is supposed to look and function like
    • Understanding how the Star Schema works, what a fact table and data dimension is and how they relate
    • Business Intelligence Analyst role and delivering data processes and products that drive organizational decision-making
    • Proficient in SQL language.


  • Intermediate knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Intermediate knowledge of how business intelligence reporting solutions fit within an enterprise data model and within data architecture.


Additional/Preferred Skills



  • Proven track record of developing ETL solutions, including the use of Microsoft SSIS
  • Leveraging descriptive statistics to gain an initial understanding of a new data set
  • Conducting diagnostic analysis to help understand the 'why' behind data trends and results
  • Utilizing BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau to visualize data and communicate a story
  • Utilizing other tools such as Microsoft SQL Server Management and Visual Studio
  • Proven track record of efficiently learning and implementing new technologies on the job
  • Understanding how business intelligence reporting solutions fit within an enterprise data model and within data architecture
  • Proven analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Proficient in spreadsheet, reporting, and database tools (e.g., Excel, Access, other Microsoft Office applications)
  • Proficient understanding of data base structures, relational databases, and concepts
  • Excellent listening and time management skills
  • Successfully communicating complex, technical items to non-technical people in an easy-to-consume fashion
  • Proven aptitude and interest in working with complex situations/problems, systems, and processes
  • Ability to work independently and within teams
  • Flexibility to meet organizational and departmental demands
  • Previous experience in Azure Data Lake Storage gen2, Azure Databricks, Synapse Analytics, and Spark
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Working an Agile development process using Jira to track sprints
  • Previous experience in predictive analytics, machine learning modeling, and statistical analysis
