SSAI seeks a Systems Engineer IV to support an Earth Science contract at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The candidate will provide systems engineering support to the SNOW mission.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Translate scientific and operational needs into software and data system requirements for federal archives (e.g., NSIDC).
  • Ensure proper handling, temporary hosting, and management of datasets from field campaigns and validation efforts.
  • Oversee data quality, consistency, and compliance with metadata standards before archival.
  • Collaborate with scientists, data managers, and archive personnel to ensure systems meet mission and science objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in computer science, systems engineering, physics, atmospheric science or related field and 10 years' experience in software engineering or development. Or, the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to define, document, and manage software and data system requirements.
  • Understanding of scientific data lifecycle, metadata standards (e.g., ISO 19115, CF conventions), ingestion, and long-term preservation practices.
  • Experience ensuring data integrity, consistency, and compliance with standards before archival.
  • Knowledge of software tools, databases, and APIs used for data access, search, and management.
  • Collaborate effectively with scientists, data managers, and archive centers to align technical solutions with mission needs.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues in data workflows or system integration.
  • Produce clear technical documentation and communicate requirements and procedures to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
