SSAI seeks a Support Scientist III to support an Earth Science contract at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The candidate will provide advanced scientific and technical support for the investigation, development, testing, and operational transition of next-generation land data assimilation and hydrological modeling capabilities within the Land Information System (LIS).

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in computer science, earth system science, atmospheric science or related field and 5 years' experience in software engineering or development. Or, the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in scientific programming and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Fortran, C/C++, shell scripting)
  • Experience with Git/GitLab-based configuration management, version control, and software delivery processes
  • Demonstrated experience with land surface modeling and/or data assimilation systems, preferably within LIS or comparable frameworks
  • Experience supporting model verification, validation, regression testing, and documentation using defined standards and experiments
  • Ability to manage, curate, and analyze large Earth science datasets from satellite, model, and in situ sources

Desired Qualifications

  • Applied experience with Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI/ML) for Earth science applications (e.g., snow, hydrology, data fusion, analytics)
  • Direct hands-on experience with LIS-related components and activities such as: LDAS within LIS, LIS-based GHI, and operational transition workflows

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
