Senior Project Engineer - Roadway Engineer

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Roadway Engineer with 5 to 10 years of roadway design experience to join our growing transportation team. This role is ideal for a self-driven professional who is eager to expand their technical expertise, take on increasingly complex challenges, and grow within a collaborative engineering environment.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience delivering transportation projects for local public agencies and jurisdictions, with a strong understanding of roadway design standards, multidisciplinary coordination, and project delivery from planning through final design.

Responsibilities

    • Lead or support the planning, design, and delivery of a wide range of roadway and transportation infrastructure projects
    • Prepare engineering plans, specifications, estimates, and technical reports for public agency projects
    • Develop roadway geometric designs, grading plans, striping plans, signing plans, and traffic control concepts
    • Coordinate with internal disciplines including traffic engineering, drainage, utility coordination, environmental, right-of-way, and construction support teams
    • Participate in client meetings, technical workshops, and agency coordination efforts
    • Assist with project schedule management, budget tracking, and quality control reviews
    • Support proposal development, technical approaches, and scope preparation for transportation pursuits
    • Mentor junior staff and contribute to a collaborative team environment
    • Stay current with evolving design standards, agency requirements, and industry best practices

Project Experience
This position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse range of transportation projects, including:

    • Pavement rehabilitation and complete street improvements
    • Road diets and corridor reconfigurations
    • Roadway widening and intersection improvements
    • Active transportation projects including bicycle and pedestrian facilities
    • Traffic calming and safety enhancement projects
    • ADA accessibility improvements
    • Multimodal corridor improvements
    • Utility coordination and infrastructure integration projects

Project Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field
    • 5 to 10 years of professional experience in roadway design
    • Experience delivering projects for cities, counties, and other local public agencies
    • Strong working knowledge of:
      • AASHTO Green Book
      • Caltrans Highway Design Manual (HDM)
      • California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD)
    • Proficiency with roadway design tools such as AutoCAD Civil 3D
    • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced consulting environment
    • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required, Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred

Physical Demands: Must be able to regularly talk, hear and operate a computer, keyboard and mouse and occasionally lift, pull/push and carry up to 20 pounds with accommodations.

Work Conditions: Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds at a low or moderate level consistent with an office setting. Exposure to high-stress, fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. Travel to other BKF locations and client sites may be required.


  • The typical base salary range for this position is $103,000.00 - $142,000.00, annualized depending upon skills, experience, education, and geographical location. This is a salary position paid biweekly.
