2026 Summer Intern - Hoogenraad Lab, Neuroscience

Department Summary

An internship position is available for an organized and highly motivated scientist to join the laboratory of Casper Hoogenraad in the Department of Neuroscience at Genentech. The Neuroscience department of Genentech is a vibrant community that strives to discover molecular causes and therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases and by collaborating across functions bring novel therapeutic approaches to help patients. In the Hoogenraad lab, we investigate the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration, and this position will center on using human iPSC-derived neuronal models to elucidate the molecular basis of Parkinson's disease.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Design and conduct cell culture experiments to validate potential therapeutic hypotheses using molecular and cell biology approaches.

  • Analyze and interpret experimental data to delineate the mechanisms underlying Parkinson's Disease biology.

  • Present findings at group meetings and contribute to scientific publications and discussions.

  • Participate in the Genentech Internship Program, which provides an exceptional environment for pursuing fundamental scientific questions and sharing your science with a diverse community.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

Who You Are

Required Education:Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).

Required Majors:Cell Biology, Neuroscience, Pathobiology, Pharmacology, or a related field.

Required Skills:

  • Experience in molecular and cellular biology, in particular Western blotting, qPCR, immunocytochemistry, fluorescent imaging and viability assays with hands-on expertise of sterile technique and cell culturing.

  • Deep passion for understanding the molecular mechanisms relevant to neurodegeneration, particularly mitochondrial pathways.

  • Ability to work independently, troubleshoot and design experiments to address key project questions.

  • Detail-oriented, diligent notebook maintenance and passion for high-quality, translational science.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Proven track record of success in wet-laboratory experimentation.

  • Proficient in biochemistry or omics technologies.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, with a proactive attitude.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $50.00 hour.Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
