Job Summary

Under minimum supervision, perform a variety of tasks assisting journeyman mechanics or lead persons in maintaining and repairing a variety of facilities plumbing and HVAC machinery and equipment. Will also participate in work involving rehabilitation and alterations to rooms, laboratories and offices with a career path directed toward Plumbing Mechanic.

Essential Job Duties
  • Responsible for following all safety procedures and maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
  • Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance on plumbing systems and components such as emergency showers and eyewash stations.
  • Assist in the installation of plumbing fixtures and equipment.
  • Provide written and oral reports effectively.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications Education and Experience:
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent with at least 2 years of experience in maintenance or construction.
  • Must possess some general knowledge of carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, and air conditioning crafts.
  • Communicate professionally with the members of the Caltech community in all situations. Must maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to work various shifts as well as overtime and weekends.
  • Maintain a valid California driver's license throughout the course of employment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Use correct punctuation, vocabulary, spelling, and sentence structure. Follow written instruction.
  • Requires a background investigation and physical examination.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on a daily basis, bend in all directions, climb stairs, squeeze with arms and hands, operate machinery using hands, and work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
  • Ability to distinguish among colors.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1 year or more of work experience in a university setting is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Asset Works and Kronos or similar preventive maintenance and timekeeping software would be a plus.
  • Strong teamwork, project management and problem resolution skills.
  • Software proficiency in MS Word, Excel, MS Project, E-Builder and Outlook.

Hiring Range

$25.50 - $32.75 Per Hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
