Position description

The Office of Undergraduate Education tutors will serve as learning assistants for Math, Bio, Physics, Chem, ENGR and CSE in an open tutoring center format. Tutors increase course proficiency by assisting students in finding their own answers to questions and helping them learning methods to solve problems independently. Support is structured to reinforce course material, with a focus on grasping the content of courses and building student capacity to be successful in future courses.

In addition, Lead Tutors will support the STEM Tutoring hub with the following:

* Planning and facilitating training activities for staff meetings,

* Researching and analyzing data to further the pedagogical development of tutors

* Mentoring fellow tutors and providing feedback in caring and constructive ways,

* Compiling, developing, and maintaining tutor resources,

* Assisting with the management and implementation of projects in support of the program's mission

Tutors are responsible for creating an inclusive learning environment, greeting students and explaining the functions of the learning centers to new students. Staff are responsible for reviewing and understanding the Employee Handbook, attending pedagogical training events, mentoring new tutors and ensuring compliance with Center procedures.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications

Knowledge of the STEM Tutoring Hub's day to day operations

Overall GPA of 3.0

Grades of B or higher earned in tutored, or equivalent

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Ability to work effectively with students of diverse backgrounds, age groups and learning needs

Possess patience and interest in assisting students

Strong grasp of course concepts

Completed courses required by subject

  • Physics Tutoring: Phys 9/19
  • ENGR Tutoring: ENGR 57
  • Bio Tutoring: Bio 110
