Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of an RN or MA performs basic patient care activities. The Medical Assistant (MA) Apprentice role allows MA students an opportunity to enhance clinical skills in a clinical environment while still enrolled in or awaiting verification of completion from an accredited Medical Assistant Program. The Medical Assistant apprentice adheres to all Denver Health Guidelines, Standard Work, Polices and Procedures for practice with specific limitations on responsibilities until education is complete and verified according to HR principles and practices.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an MA or RN, including but not limited to completing patient rooming procedure: vital signs, height and weight, questionnaire completion and other data collection. (100%)
  • Assists providers and other clinical personnel by chaperoning, obtaining supplies, supporting the patient. (0%)
  • Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to supervising MA or RN. (0%)
  • Assists with keeping unit(s) and patient rooms stocked, clean, and orderly. (0%)
  • Develop specific Medical Assistant skills through observation of experts and supervised, hands-on experience. (0%)
  • Partners with interprofessional team on healthcare consumer throughput by proactively solving problems related to access and clinic flow. (0%)
  • Collaborates with interprofessional teams to incorporate Lean principles for quality improvement initiatives. (0%)

Education:

  • Certificate Program Certificate from a clinical Medical Assistant school Required or
  • Accredited program of Licensed Practical Nursing with an active LPN license Required

Work Experience:

  • Completion of a 160 hour Externship Required or
  • 6 months direct patient care experience in an outpatient setting Required

Licenses:

  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Within scope of job works well with others and support appropriate patient care. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to receive and utilize performance feedback, education and training to advance skills and improve job performance.
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality of patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities or to improve a patient's care.
  • Ability to ensure all duties, responsibilities and competencies are conducted in a manner that is effective and appropriate to patients/clients to who care/service is being provided.
  • Ability to complete and maintain clinical competency standards.
