Position description

Junior Specialist - Division of Cardiovascular Medicine

NATURE AND PURPOSE:

The position of Junior Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment or with social science research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. The Junior Specialist stays apprised of emerging issues and problems and maintains technical competence in the designated area(s) of specialization. Within this defined area and when appropriate, the Junior Specialist is expected to provide leadership, facilitate teamwork and develop collaborative relationships with colleagues and to supply input into the planning of research and educational programs. Normally, Junior Specialists do not have Principal Investigator (PI) status but may obtain permission by exception and/or collaborate with a PI in preparing research proposals for extramural funding. The Junior Specialist is evaluated for merit and promotion using three basic criteria outlined below.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE

I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (90% EFFORT)

The Junior Specialist will work under the direction of Dr. Javier Lopez, the Principal Investigator, on research projects related to the American College of Cardiology and HRSA.



  • They will collaborate directly with personnel involved in research on mammography, cardiac prevention, hypertension, and rehabilitation under Dr. Lopez's guidance.
  • The primary responsibilities will include investigating cardiac risk and the development and progression of hypertension, with a particular focus on prevention and social determinants of health in disadvantaged populations.
  • The Junior Specialist will assist in analyzing retrospective patient data from UC Davis electronic health records, emphasizing demographic data, epidemiology, biostatistics, and coding.
  • They will also contribute to community-engaged research in partnership with the Center for Reducing Health Disparities.
  • In this role, they will support data analysis efforts involving both UC Davis and community partner records, with a focus on health outcomes.
  • Additional responsibilities may include reviewing research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications relevant to this subspecialty.
  • This position requires strong interpersonal, communication, and decision making skills, as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • The Junior Specialist will be expected to contribute to both the cardiac rehabilitation team and the Center for Reducing Health Disparities.


Performance will be evaluated based on contributions to research and outreach activities, as applicable tot he specific project, and documented by any of the following:



  • Publications that acknowledge the Junior Specialist's significant and meaningful contribution to the work.
  • Publications on which the Junior Specialist is an author.
  • Other evidence (e.g., letters from collaborators or principal investigators) that work done by the Junior Specialist contributed to publishable research.
  • Active dissemination of information (beyond the boundaries of the campus) through informal instruction, presentations, or other means stemming from the Junior Specialist's research accomplishments.
  • Other evidence of recognized expertise may include formal documentation of intellectual effort and participation in publishable research activities, first authorship on publications/patents, presentation of research at regional/national meetings, invitations to review grant proposals and/or journal articles, invitations to participate in research projects, and/or service on advisory panels.


II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% EFFORT)

A. Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations.

B. Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)

A. May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.

B. Participate in activities of committees within the department, college, campus and other University entities, as appropriate.

NUMBER OF POSITIONS AVAILABLE: 3

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: One year with the possibility to extend to two years maximum, based on the needs of the research project.

Additional qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in a related field and the ability to review research proposals and journal manuscripts.

Preferred qualifications include the ability to assist in analyzing retrospective patient data from UC Davis electronic health records, emphasizing demographic data, epidemiology, biostatistics, and coding.
