Launch Systems Safety Analyst

LOCATION: El Segundo, CA

JOB STATUS: Full-time

CLEARANCE: TS/SCI

CERTIFICATION: CSP or PE (Preferred)

TRAVEL: As Needed

Astrion is seeking a highly qualified Launch Systems Safety Engineer (LSSA) to provide system safety engineering and hazard analysis support for National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) space vehicle (SV) programs, launch systems, ground support equipment, and facilities. This role supports the Office of Space Launch and ensures compliance with applicable Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) requirements, Range Safety regulations, and NRO corporate policies. The ideal candidate will possess Technical Level III (T3) system safety credentials and demonstrate deep expertise in aerospace system safety within an integrated government-contractor environment.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • Technical Level III (T3) System Safety qualification

  • Experience performing system safety engineering for launch vehicles, spacecraft, or missile systems

  • Working knowledge of Air Force and Range Safety requirements, including AFSPCMAN 91-710 or contract equivalents

  • Experience conducting system safety hazard analyses for hazardous systems such as explosives, propellants, high-pressure systems, or cryogenics

  • Ability to review and assess safety data packages, procedures, and contractor deliverables

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to interface with government and contractor stakeholders

  • Experience supporting safety reviews, readiness reviews, and design reviews

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Professional Engineer (PE)

  • Familiarity with NRO programs, SV System Safety design, and the NRO Safety Review Team process

  • Working knowledge of EWR 127-1 or 91-710 Range Safety requirements

  • Knowledge of nuclear safety and/or ionizing/non-ionizing radiation

  • Experience working in an integrated contracting team environment

  • Prior experience supporting launch operations at Space Wing or range facilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure implementation and compliance with applicable 30th/45th Space Wing Range Safety requirements for NRO space vehicle programs, support equipment, and facilities

  • Review and assess NRO Operations & Maintenance facility and equipment work authorization requests, including engineering change requests and preliminary project reviews

  • Review and assess safety data packages produced by satellite vehicle contractors, facility contractors, and other users of exclusive NRO facilities

  • Review and assess safety procedures and operational plans for space vehicle programs, launch vehicle integration, and O&M support activities

  • Participate in and support the development and tailoring of safety requirements documents in accordance with AFSPCMAN 91-710 or contract-equivalent standards

  • Conduct and support facility readiness walk-downs prior to space vehicle arrival and propellant operations

  • Review and assess contractor explosive procedures and site plans

  • Attend and participate in program reviews and working groups, including PDRs, CDRs, GOWGs, GORRs, TIMs, and splinter groups, to evaluate system safety compliance

  • Perform system safety hazard analyses related to ordnance, explosives, munitions, pyrotechnics, cryogenics, toxic and hypergolic propellants, high-pressure gases, radioactive materials, and other hazardous systems

  • Prepare, review, and approve hazardous processing procedures

  • Provide on-site safety monitoring of hazardous operations

  • Support pre-launch, launch, post-launch, range, and recovery operations as required

  • Perform additional system safety duties as assigned
