Below, you'll find other important information about this position. The incumbent will maintain the embryology and hormone laboratories according to CAP and CLIA standards. The primary duties will be to perform laboratory testing in the hormone laboratory and to perform laboratory procedures in the embryology laboratory of the Reproductive Endocrine Laboratory of the WVU Center for Reproductive Medicine. The incumbent will be part of a small team that functions to provide services in embryology, andrology and hormone analyses; all of which the technologist should be able to perform. They will serve as backup personnel in the andrology laboratory. Weekend rotations for coverage of clinic duties will be required at a minimum of one in every third weekend, although coverage during two out of every three weekends is likely.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology/Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Science OR Bachelor's degree in a chemical or biological science, or 30 or more years of previous experience concurrent with CLIA grandfathered exception.

2. Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided:

WV: Medical Laboratory Scientist license or Trainee License

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position.They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties.Other duties may be assigned.

1. Assists the laboratory director to maintain the hormone, embryology and andrology laboratories in accordance with all CAP, CLIA and SART guidelines.

2. Performs or oversees all hormone laboratory and embryology laboratory quality control and quality assurance procedures.

3. Orders and maintains inventory and equipment in the hormone and embryology laboratories.

4. Performs patient hormone testing and must be proficient in all aspects of specimen serum testing using automated equipment.

5. Performs embryology procedures and must be proficient at all aspects of embryology including: in vitro culture of gametes and embryos, isolation of oocytes from follicular fluid, classification of oocytes, zygotes and embryos, micromanipulation of gametes and embryos, cryopreservation of oocytes and embryos, and embryo transfer.

6. Assists in theandrologylaboratory as needed. This includes being proficient in all areas of andrology including semen analyses, sperm cryopreservation and semen preparation for IUI or ART procedures.

7. Works regular weekend and holiday rotation in addition to covering emergency services (i.e. alarm call for equipment failure) when needed.

8. Reports patient data once testing is completed using an electronic medical system.

9. Maintains laboratory database, patient accession logs, reagent logs,laboratorySDS, and patient records.

10. Maintains confidentiality according to policy when interacting with patients, physicians, families, co-workers and the public regarding demographic and clinical information. Complies with Notices of Privacy Practices, and the Patient's Rights and Responsibilities.

11. Demonstrates flexibility to meet the needs of the clinic in regard to changes in work volume, planned change, scheduling changes and emergency call-backs (i.e. weather, disaster or alarm system) .

12. Participates in performance and quality improvement (i.e. follows established protocol, identifies deviations or deficiencies in standards/systems/processes and communicates problems to the laboratory director or clinic manager)

13. Works with laboratory director to implement new testing procedures or update existing procedures when relevant.

14. Supervises any students and ancillary personnel in the hormone laboratory.

15. Train new personnel in hormone testing procedures.

16. Converses with physicians about results of hormone testing and answers questions related to laboratory techniques as applicable.

17. Demonstrates knowledge of procedure to report and/or document unsafe/hazardous conditions, incidents and defective equipment in compliance with hospital policy.

18. Communicates problems hindering workflow to the laboratory director in a timely manner

19. Communicates effectively verbally and in writing.Receives and relays pertinent information reliably to other members of the healthcare team.

2. Visual acuity must be exceptional as frequent microscope use is required.

3. Must have exceptional manual dexterity to operate microscopes, pipettes, keyboards and other laboratory equipment.
