About the Job

Position Overview:

This is a professional/administrative position in the IT unit of the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Minnesota. This position is responsible for overseeing the life cycle management of end user devices including purchasing, deployment, proactive management, and disposal. Responsible for managing a large budget and several iPad and student device programs, this position requires an ability to lead others through influence, excellent organizational skill, and the ability to manage several tasks simultaneously.

Job Responsibilities:

Manage Computer Replacement Program and IT Assets - 50%

  • Oversee College Computer Replacement Program and deployments
    • Work with Technical Coordinators to assess system and training needs for computers and standard applications in the college-wide computer replacement program.
    • Create and coordinate training and training materials to support the college-wide computer replacement program.
    • Recommend and lead the implementation of changes to processes and procedures
    • Set computer replacement schedules and departmental copays to ensure proper balance of device functionality and economy for departments and users of technology
    • Collaborate with Technical Coordinators to proactively identify and replace outdated equipment, identify departmental needs, handle unusual requests
    • Identify trends/cycles for equipment demand, inventory levels, and purchasing timetables to ensure a consistent inventory of configured, ready-to-deploy equipment
    • Maintain accurate hardware asset records
    • Document purchasing requests, invoices, records, justifications, and cross-charges
    • Oversee decommissioning processes for outdated or damaged equipment in accordance with CRP, University policy, and vendor agreements
  • Manage hardware acquisitions
    • Research, test, and set standardized configurations for new technology based on common end-user demands, cost, and efficiencies.
    • Plan and execute efficient purchasing processes in cooperation with financial services, vendors, and University partners
    • Facilitate acquisition of customized or specialized equipment in coordination with Technical Coordinators, vendors, and financial services
  • Coordinate annual distribution and collection of several hundred Chromebooks and iPads for the college's First Year Experience and Teacher Education programs

Device Management - 25%

  • Manage a wide variety of user devices using centralized management tools
    • Collaborate with central IT to ensure that initial device configuration and provisioning is in line with college needs
    • Manage device membership in Active Directory groups to identify inclusion among departments, buildings and workgroups
    • Maintain AD groups that can be queried to populate SCCM/Jamf Pro device collections
    • Manage device membership in SCCM and Jamf Pro collections to effectively deploy software and manage policy settings
    • Maintain and update deployable software packages
    • Harness Apple Device Enrollment Program and MDM capabilities of Jamf Pro to simplify enrollment and setup processes.
    • Review device configurations to ensure success and identify trouble areas including hardware inconsistencies or incompatibility
    • Manage creation of AD objects and DHCP registration for new devices
    • Create and maintain documentation for deployment and management procedures
    • Coordinate with Technical Coordinators to test new procedures, systems, policies

Other Tech Systems Support - 15%

  • Assist college's Server Administration team in a backup capacity
    • Manage file sharing permissions using Active Directory
    • Respond to security alerts or incidents following standard procedures for threat eradication and device replacement
    • Ensure availability of administrative backup servers/systems
  • Provide expert support for desktop support team
    • Manage work of student employees to assist with common tasks
    • Provide expert Tier 2-3 support for Technical Coordinators
    • Create and maintain documentation for deployment procedures, and for common desktop support team tasks/issues
    • Facilitate communication and coordinate efforts of Technical Coordinators and identify common challenges and/or support issues
    • Participate as a member of the college's server and network support team

Administrative - 10%

  • Professional Development
    • Participate in University technical and policy groups and communities
    • Keep abreast of University-wide activities, standards, and policies
    • Participate in formal internal and external training opportunities
    • Independently research and keep abreast of new software, tools, and methods
    • Support and train IT staff and users of technology
    • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree. Four years of work experience in user support areas.
  • Four years experience to include Windows, Macintosh, and iOS support
  • Experience with Active Directory administration and Group Policies
  • Experience with either JAMF Pro or Microsoft SCCM
  • Detail oriented, willing to learn new tasks, able to work occasional off-hours and/or weekends for special tasks or to resolve problems
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and guide your own work as well as the work of others
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills quickly and independently

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification for JAMF Pro
  • Certification for Microsoft SCCM
  • Certification for Microsoft Windows Server
  • Experience with Apple Device Enrollment Program
  • Experience providing user support in a higher education environment
  • Powershell and/or Bash scripting experience
  • Experience creating and managing databases.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and achieve established deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
