SUMMARY

The Clinical Education Specialist (CES) utilizes nursing arts and sciences, child development, education, psychosocial, and cultural theories to facilitate the delivery of comprehensive clinical care to patients and families at the unit level. They work independently, and in partnership with unit leadership and colleagues across departments. The CES provides expertise in education, educational design, adult learning theory, and scholarly inquiry. Major role responsibilities include competency management, education, role development, orientation/onboarding, research/EBP/QI, and collaborative partnerships.

This position will support the educational needs of the Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR), Cath and Electrophysiology Lab, Cardiac Pre/Post Unit, and ECMO team.

Our Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) cares for patients of all ages, including newborns requiring urgent surgery for complex heart defects. From minimally invasive repairs to open-heart procedures and heart transplants, our surgical team consistently delivers outcomes that surpass national benchmarks across the full spectrum of congenital heart surgeries. Together with Cardiologists, Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Advanced Practice Providers (including Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants), Cardiac Anesthesiologists, and Surgical Technicians, our nurses successfully care for our pediatric cardiac patient population.

With pediatric cardiac catheterization accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission and the lowest-radiation equipment available, our pediatric cardiac catheterization team and facilities are among the most advanced in the world. By partnering with all cardiologists and sub-specialists in the Heart Institute, we care for patients with a wide range of heart conditions from birth to adulthood - and long after.

The Pediatric and Adult Congenital Electrophysiology Program at Children's Hospital Colorado has been internationally recognized for treating children and young adults with pediatric cardiac arrhythmias. Seamlessly integrated with other pediatric cardiology subspecialties in our nationally ranked Heart Institute, our program provides top heart rhythm care for infants, children, teens and young adults. We also treat adults with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD), providing lifetime treatment for patients born with congenital heart defects and heart rhythm abnormalities. From pediatric electrophysiology (EP) studies to cardiac ablation techniques, implantable heart pacing devices to cardiac genetics, we proudly offer the most advanced and sophisticated electrophysiology procedures and care in the region.

The ECMO Program at Children's Colorado is comprised of a dedicated team of nearly 30 nurses and respiratory therapists called ECMO specialists. These specialists are trained by industry experts to monitor the ECMO circuit, one-on-one, at a patient's bedside. We treat approximately 80-90 kids per year in need of ECMO services. In addition to the ECMO specialists, Children's Colorado has an advanced clinical team specially trained in ECMO support. This team consists of dedicated ICU doctors, surgeons, nurses and perfusionists who oversee the program. This oversight includes specialized clinical and technical training, continued program development, investigation of new technology, and research to provide the best possible care for kids in need of heart and lung recovery.
