The University of Virginia Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery is pleased to announce an exciting paid opportunity for medical students seeking 12 months of on-site, in-person, specialized research training. Through the mentorship from our committed faculty, Fellows will gain invaluable experience leading novel projects that align with their area(s) of interest and help to support ongoing departmental research projects. The overall goal of this program is for each Fellow to acquire foundational knowledge and principles of study design, conduct, and data analysis; gain exposure to different otolaryngologic and research disciplines; and develop expertise supporting an academic career in otolaryngology. Fellowship will culminate with a capstone project designed, conducted, and orally presented by the fellow at regional and/or national conferences. Fellows receive a competitive stipend. Fellows will collaborate with faculty and take a primary role in conducting research projects, preferably in multiple subspecialty areas. Depending on the Fellow's interests, goals and existing skillset, projects could span a variety of research disciplines including retrospective and prospective clinical research, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, population-based database mining, innovative product development, and basic science/translational research. Fellows will have the opportunity to complete projects already in progress, but when possible will oversee projects from initiation to completion. Preparation of abstracts for presentation at national meetings and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals is expected. Qualified candidates must have a bachelor's degree and be enrolled in an MD training program. The successful candidate for the fellowship will have a strong interest in basic science and/or clinical research within otolaryngology as well as prior experience in experimental design, data assessment/interpretation, scientific presentation, and scholarly writing. This position will accept applications through March 31, 2025 or until the position(s) are filled, with offers to top candidates made on a rolling basis. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. This is a 12-month appointment.
