The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a mechanical designer/Plant3D administrator for a hybrid role that supports multidisciplinary teams. In this position, you'll create 3D models and 2D drawings, coordinate design efforts, and lead Autodesk Plant3D standardization and process improvements. As the Plant3D Administrator, you'll maintain project templates, piping specs, catalogs, and symbol libraries, while also providing staff training and user support. The role offers flexibility in Plant3D administration time and encourages continuous improvement and cross-team collaboration.

Your impact - key project responsibilities (50%-75% time)

  • 3D Model creation: build and verify detailed Plant3D models for mechanical and miscellaneous systems.

  • Mechanical drawing production: create, update, and revise mechanical drawings as project needs evolve.

  • Engineer collaboration: work with engineers to ensure accuracy and clarity in all drawing deliverables.

  • Site information gathering: occasionally visit project sites to collect data for precise drawing development.

  • System drafting: draft designs for pumping, piping, ventilation, equipment, conveyors, and building systems.

  • Cross-discipline support: occasionally assist with structural, electrical, or civil drawing tasks.

  • Team development: delegate to junior staff and train on the project

Your impact - key Plant3D administrator responsibilities (25%-50% time)

  • Resource development: lead the development of Plant3D project templates, piping specs and catalogs, Isometric styles, orthographic drawing styles, tags and data fields, P&ID symbol libraries, reporting templates, etc. Update software documentation to support efficient and effective use.

  • Production standards and Quality: Develop and maintain standards, templates, and best practices to ensure consistent, high-quality deliverables.

  • Training and user support: design and deliver training programs, provide ongoing technical support, and assist users with troubleshooting software-related issues.

  • Software updates and coordination: collaborate with IT and other software coordinators to plan, communicate, and implement software updates and rollouts.

  • Continuous improvement: evaluate new features, tools, and workflows, implementing enhancements that improve user experience and project outcomes.

  • Communication and collaboration: act as a liaison between business users, IT, and other coordinators, ensuring clear communication and alignment on software-related matters.

About the opportunity

  • Compensation: Anticipated range of $39-$47 hourly. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as non-exempt (hourly) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • Hybrid: A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Minneapolis, Hibbing, or Duluth, Minnesota, or Ann Arbor, Michigan, offices.

  • Travel expectation: occasional travel is expected to support project work. The candidate will be expected to travel to Minneapolis once a yearto support our internal training week. Staying current on Plant3D tools and technology may require additional travel for training/conferences/etc.

About you - required core competencies

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience using Autodesk Plant3D on project work for production of construction documents including creation of P&IDs, PFDs, piping isometric drawings, piping orthographic drawings, BOMs, and equipment and parts lists. Experience in industrial piping design using Autodesk Plant3D.

  • Minimum of two years of experience managing Autodesk Plant3D project standards including specifications, libraries, annotations, CAD standards, etc. Ability to create and update Plant3D CAD standards to match Barr's internal and external client CAD standards.

  • Experience working on multidisciplinary project teams and coordinating with mechanical and electrical designers and engineers.

Software:

  • Understanding of the core uses of various software packages (Plant3D, AutoCAD, Revit, CADWorx, Civil3D, Solidworks, etc) and ability to guide project managers in selecting the best software for specific applications. Experience setting up large, complex Plant3D projects for coordination with Revit or other software packages.

  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • Education: associate degree in engineering technology or a related field. Autodesk Certified Professional in AutoCAD.

  • Software: experience using Autodesk Recap or other Point Cloud processing software and Navisworks. Experience working with Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM360, or similar document management applications.

  • Experience developing, managing, and leading the implementation process related to reality capture and design software.
