The Position

2026 Summer Intern - Translational Medicine

Department Summary

The Translational Medicine - OMNI (TM-OMNI) department at Genentech conducts translational research to inform clinical development in disease areas of Ophthalmology, Metabolism, Neuroscience, Immunology and Infectious Diseases. Our research encompasses cutting-edge support of clinical biomarker discovery and development, the development of personalized healthcare strategies, and clinical translational research. We study the molecular and cellular pathways driving disease to generate novel target and biomarker approaches.

The intern will also join the Discovery Proteomics group in the Translational Genomics and Proteomics Center (TGP), which focuses on generating high-throughput proteomics datasets to support target and biomarker discovery. The Discovery Proteomics group develops advanced mass spectrometry and sample preparation methods to enable the measurement of low-abundance proteins in various disease models and clinical specimens.

In this role, the intern will contribute to developing novel proteomics approaches to advance biomarker discovery from human biofluids, which is critical to accelerating clinical development. The intern will be co-mentored by a translational research scientist in the TM-OMNI department and a proteomics scientist in the TGP center.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Develop ultrasensitive proteomics technologies for biomarker discovery using human biofluids.

  • Design and optimize sample preparation protocols and mass spectrometry data collection methods to profile low-abundant proteins in biofluids.

  • Collect, process, and analyze large-scale proteomics datasets, utilizing statistical methods to nominate biomarker candidates for inferring target engagement and clinical outcomes.

  • Collaborate closely with the TM-OMMI, Proteomics, and Computational Sciences departments through regular meetings, seminars, and cross-functional teamwork.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
