About us
One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we're on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We're looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.
What you'll do
As a Software Engineer (Linux/Networking/Automation - ATCA chassis), the primary focus is on production operations/automation: maintaining Linux-based ATCA platforms, ensuring secure and reliable network services, and driving automation for deployment, observability, and incident response in an Agile DevOps environment. This includes change management, maintenance windows, on-call readiness, and continuous improvement of operational runbooks and SLOs. You will be working with a geographically dispersed team.
The day-to-day
- Own day-to-day operations of multi-shelf ATCA chassis (preferably Radisys), including module lifecycle, platform health, capacity, and firmware/software rollouts within defined maintenance windows.
- Lead IP networking change implementation in production and pre-prod, including canary/scoped rollouts, test-image deployment, and post-change validation with rollback plans.
- Develop and manage operational automation with Ansible, Python, and shell for addressing configuration drift, patching, and consistent deployments throughout Linux fleets.
- Establish and operate monitoring, alerting, and diagnostics using packet tools (Wireshark, tcpdump), traffic generators (IXIA, iperf), and system/network telemetry to ensure SLIs/SLOs are met.
- Create and maintain operational runbooks, SOPs, and playbooks for incident response, change control, and disaster recovery; contribute to RCA and corrective action plans.
- Perform routine system administration across RHEL/Ubuntu/SLES: package management (yum/apt/zypper), kernel/network tuning, filesystem and network configuration, and security hardening.
- Drive readiness for releases: pre-flight checks, staging validation, production cutovers, and post-deploy verification; coordinate with cross-functional teams for approvals and communications.
- Participate in an on-call rotation, triage incidents, execute mitigations, and implement post-incident improvements to reduce MTTR and eliminate repeat issues.
- Conduct performance and resilience testing using IXIA/iperf and IPv4 traffic patterns; validate WiMAX-based scenarios where applicable.
- Champion CI/CD integration of operational tests (smoke, health, conformance) using Jenkins/GitLab CI to gate changes and enforce quality bars.
