As part of our evolving needs and in response to rapid growth, we currently have an opening for Machine Operator I - Grinding at Unisteel in Sterling Heights, MI.

Purpose

The Machine Operator I position is responsible for performing various tasks to set up and operate assigned machines; Operates manual, semi-automatic and automatic equipment according to established procedures and processes to accurately finish material (steel or aluminum stock) to customer specification; Ensures quality via quality check post finish. Job complexity ranges from simple, highly repetitive tasks to repetitive but difficult tasks, congruent to incumbent's experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up, adjust, and operative Blanchard-style rotary surface grinders, often involving magnetic chucks and vertical spindles, to grind flat surfaces.
  • Calibrates appropriately to complete accurate layout and centering of material per customer drawing/blueprint.
  • Loads and unloads material with the aid of a forklift, magnets, chains, slings, or an overhead crane, positioning material as required.
  • Completes paperwork and inputs information into the computer system, updating inventory.
  • Sets controls for speed and feed rate. Ensures that the metal is shaped or finished properly adjusting the speed of the machine during shaping, if needed.
  • Sets-up and operates manual and numerical controlled (CNC) machines including but not limited to various styles of lathes. Maintains necessary lubricant and coolant concentration, cleaning or replacing coolant as required.
  • Observes chip output characteristics in determining carbide replacement, making appropriate adjustments.
  • Inspects the quality of the material during and after the procedure being performed to the material.
  • Uses measuring instruments as necessary including, but not limited to tape measuring tape, profilometers, calipers, and micrometer.
  • Checks identification on all material handled by stamping or marking with necessary numbers when required.
  • Delivers material to next area of operation as required.
  • Completes required production reports, using computer system as required.
  • Reports defective material and faulty equipment to the Operations Manager or Maintenance Department immediately.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment and abides by all plant safety regulations and work rules. Performs safety inspections on cranes, chains, slings and magnets.
  • Performs in role of Saw/Flow Operator I, II, III as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Working Conditions



    • Shop environment that offers protection from outside environmental conditions. Subject to changes in temperature (hot and cold) and humidity. Frequently exposed to atmospheric conditions that include moderate noise, fumes, odors, dust and dirt.
    • While primarily standing or walking, performs medium to heavy work, exerting up to 50+ lbs. of force regularly and/or up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally (with assistance) to move objects. Uses both non-powered and hand power tools.
    • Exposed to moving objects with risk of electric shock and occasionally exposed to vibration.
    • Frequent fine manual dexterity and multilimb coordination including handling, pinching, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, turning, and bending.
    • Is assigned duties according to specified procedures. Work is checked frequently.

      Qualifications



      • Working mechanical knowledge/aptitude applicable with experience specific to the essential functions of the position. Additional training provided.
      • Able to understand basic correspondence, instructions, rules, policies, graphs, charts, customer drawings and/or blueprints. Able to learn from written passages by discerning the main idea or key facts.
      • Ability to perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and use basic numerical concepts (whole numbers, percentages) to complete job tasks.
      • Ability to use measuring devices such as tapes and gauges where reading is direct and obvious.
      • Vision includes acuity near and far, color, peripheral vision and depth perception.
      • Hearing ability to exchange information with co-workers and management should faults/issues with material or equipment is detected
