The Position
2026 Summer Intern - Biology Research | AI Development We seek a highly motivated research intern to join our Regulatory Language Understanding (ReLU) group within Genentech's department of Biology Research AI Development (BRAID). In BRAID, we develop machine learning methods for various applications in research biology and target discovery. This role offers the unique opportunity to develop and apply cutting-edge machine learning methods to improve our understanding of gene regulation. A successful candidate for this role should have practical experience in deep learning and state-of-the-art Python-based machine learning libraries, as well as a passion for understanding biological mechanisms. The candidate will further our work on sequence modeling approaches that can be used to advance programs in gene and cell therapy. This intern will drive a project within our team, working on topics such as improving methods to predict the activity of out-of-distribution sequences, model-guided DNA sequence design, or leveraging models to understand sequence determinants of gene expression. Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
