Job Summary

The Dir-Outpatient & Specialty Pharmacy Services is responsible for strategic direction and operational oversight for all outpatient and specialty pharmacy services at Prisma Health. The Director plans, directs, and monitors all activities within the health system's retail and specialty pharmacy divisions. They ensure that all services comply with legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards while aligning with the health system's broader strategic goals. The director provides leadership to pharmacy managers and staff, collaboratively manages departmental budgets, and oversees initiatives to enhance operational efficiency, medication safety, and patient satisfaction.

Essential Functions

  • Strategic Planning and Business Development:

    -Identifies, creates, and executes strategies to expand retail and specialty pharmacy services, driving smart business growth, market differentiation, and innovation within the organization.

    -Works collaboratively for budget development, manages departmental profit and loss (P&L), and implements cost-saving measures.

    -Works with purchasing team to manage and negotiate contracts with pharmaceutical manufacturers, third-party payers, and vendors.

    -Collaborates with business operations team to strategize on class of trade optimization opportunities, including 340B and own use.

    -Serves as a brand ambassador and actively promote the organization's and service line's mission and values.

  • Operational Leadership:

    -Develops and implements best practices to ensure efficient, safe, and accurate medication dispensing and delivery.

    -Leverage present and future technology and automation for operational efficiency.

    -Monitors and analyzes key performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and implements solutions to enhance efficiency and quality.

    -Establishes and updates pharmacy policies to meet all federal, state, and local regulations, including those specific to specialty pharmacy accreditations.

    -Collaboratively manages the integration and use of pharmacy information systems, automation, and electronic health records (EHR) to improve workflow and patient safety.

  • Staff Management and Development:

    -Selects, hires, develops, and evaluates pharmacy managers and staff.

    -Fosters a culture of excellence, engagement, and professional development by providing guidance and mentorship to pharmacy personnel.

    -Monitors team performance, identifies areas for improvement, and provides coaching.

  • Clinical and Quality Assurance:

    -Leads initiatives to enhance the patient experience, including medications to home programs, transitions of care, medication therapy management, adherence programs, drug utilization management, vaccine programs, and clinical consultations.

    -Oversees quality assurance programs to monitor medication errors and adverse drug reactions and implements corrective action, as appropriate.

    -Collaborates with other healthcare providers to optimize medication management and promote evidence-based practices.

  • Regulatory Compliance:

    -Ensures adherence to all regulatory and accreditation standards from bodies such as the state Boards of Pharmacy, DPH, DEA, URAC, ACHC, and others as appropriate.

    -Leads efforts for proactive audit preparation to maintain compliance and transparency.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

    • Job has direct and/or indirect supervision of team members that may include final budget authority, hire/termination authority, performance appraisal responsibility and disciplinary authority. Job will be considered a member of management staff at Prisma Health or affiliate and will have direct reports.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Education - Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from an ACPE accredited program.

    • Experience - Five (5) years of pharmacy management experience (multi-site preferred) including three (3) years of experience in retail and / or ambulatory clinic settings.

    • Pharmacist Licensure from state in which work is performed

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Project Management skills preferred.

    • Knowledge in reimbursement models and health plan organizations preferred.
