Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located at the Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off. The Nuclear Materials Performance (NMP) division performs post-irradiation examination (PIE) of structural materials and advanced characterization of irradiated materials. For this position, most work activities will be performed in the Structural Properties Laboratory (formally called the Sample Preparation Laboratory). This is a newly constructed hotcell that focuses on PIE of structural materials. The job will focus on robotics and their use in a radioactive environment. This involves programming the robots to perform standard functions, free mode robotics use, development of tooling and techniques to increase robotic efficiencies, and machine learning/artificial intelligence associated with robotics. Other functions include but not limited to support engineering of hotcell tooling and equipment. This includes troubleshooting, hot cell modification of equipment, and development of tooling to support hot cell operations. This job works with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers. Responsibilities:
- Support research activities utilizing robotics and manipulators.
- Development of scripted programs to perform operations of robotics in a hot cell environment.
- Free mode operation of robotics
- Development of tooling and techniques to increase efficiencies with robotics.
- Support operation of research equipment that utilizes robotics and involvement with experiments.
- Work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers on challenging work scopes.
- Apply advanced technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), Large Language Models (LLMs), physics-informed machine learning, systems performance analysis, and/or sensor methodologies to increase robotic efficiencies.
- Work with hot cell engineers to develop tooling and modifications to hot-cell equipment.
- Support other research and engineering activities throughout the facility.
- Adhere to INL policies and procedures.
- Completion of qualifications associated with position within 1 yr.
- Learn the INL engineering process and qualify as an engineer.
- Qualify as a Systems Engineer within 15 months. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Level 2: Bachelor's degree in robotics, data science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, physics, autonomy, artificial intelligence, or related technical discipline and 2+ years of experience or master's degree or higher in the fields posted above.
- Level 3: Bachelor's degree in robotics data science, engineering, mathematics, computer science, physics, autonomy, artificial intelligence, or related technical discipline and 4+ years of experience, a master's degree and 2+ years experience or PhD.
Preferred:
- Experience with robotics and their operation and programming.
- Knowledge of artificial intelligence and/machine learning process.

Job Information: - The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($77,628 - $159,228) / Level 3 ($93,204 - $191,076). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
