The MU Student Health Center (SHC) is a unit within the University of Missouri-Columbia's Student Health & Well-Being department under Student Affairs. The Student Health & Well-Being area consists of a network of care that includes the Counseling Center, Student Health Center, Wellness Resource Center and Community Providers.

The SHC offers medical care with behavioral health consultation and psychiatry services. As part of Student Health and Well-Being, SHC providers coordinate treatment with counselors at the Counseling Center.

Job Description

Summary
The representative is responsible for greeting patients and visitors, working the registration desk, arriving patients, updating demographics, loading insurance, accepting copayments, performing data entry, and scheduling appointments. They assist patients during checkout after provider visits, schedule follow-ups with SHC when needed, and coordinate referrals to outside providers. The representative notifies providers when a patient has no-showed and updates the scheduling system accordingly. They contact patients whose appointments must be rescheduled due to provider schedule changes, collect payments for students needing rabies titers or a second STI screen, manage after-hours nursing reports, answer the main phone line, and help cover other PSR positions.

Essential Functions

  • This position will cross-train to assist in other areas of our center and may help with off-site events. Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, and/or staff to address and resolve any issues that arise during the visit.
  • Communicate any expected delays to patients and ancillary service departments.
  • Greet and escort patients, answer the phone system, handle and/or direct calls to the appropriate area, and place calls as requested by the supervisor. Use excellent guest-relations skills in all interactions with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Maintain the general appearance of the waiting room, reception area, and offices; straighten magazines, chairs, and other light furniture.
  • Validate patient demographics, insurance, pre-certification, prior authorization, and referrals; accurately manage copay collections; perform patient check-in and check-out, batching, scheduling, bumping, cancelling, and marking no-shows; and effectively utilize computer applications.
  • Depending on the location and assigned area of responsibility, additional duties may be assigned.
Shift

Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

This position may require evening and weekend hours supporting activities and programs within the department. Occasionally division and campus projects may require additional hours outside of your normal schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired.

Six (6) months of experience with frontline customer service and guest relations duties and skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in a health care setting, hospital admissions, registration, medical office, and use of medical terminology strongly preferred.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $15.00 - $23.32 per hour, paid on a biweekly basis
