Job Title: IT Business Systems Analyst Location(s): San Francisco, CA Position Summary We are seeking an IT Business Systems Analyst with very strong SQL capabilities and direct UCPath experience. These two qualifications are mandatory. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience supporting HR and Payroll systems-particularly within university or public-sector environments-and is capable of validating complex data structures, troubleshooting integrations, and partnering with business stakeholders to support ongoing system operations. UCPath experience must include working directly within the UCPath environment at a UC campus, with demonstrated familiarity across its data model, funding structures, combo codes, FAUs, benefits processing, and payroll validations. This role functions as a technical and analytical lead, supporting Oracle Cloud HCM, UCPath integrations, and related boundary systems. The Analyst works closely with HR, Payroll, IT, and Operations teams to analyze business processes, define requirements, resolve production issues, and ensure system integrity across the HR technology ecosystem.
Required Experience and Qualifications
SQL (Required)
- Expert-level SQL skills, including the ability to:
- Validate large HR and Payroll data sets.
- Troubleshoot data issues and interface failures.
- Interpret and analyze complex relational table structures.
- Build and execute advanced queries for reconciliation and validation.
UCPath Experience (Required) Candidates must have direct, hands-on experience with UCPath, including:
- UCPath data model and table relationships.
- Funding uploads, combo codes, FAUs.
- Payroll, GL, and benefits data validations.
- Troubleshooting HR/Payroll transactions within UCPath.
- Experience working for a UC campus (not just vendor or consulting exposure).
HR/Payroll Systems Functional Expertise
- Experience with PeopleSoft HCM, Oracle HCM, or similar enterprise HR/Payroll platforms.
- Functional exposure to HR, Payroll, Workforce Administration, or Benefits.
- Experience gathering business requirements, documenting functional specifications, and supporting configuration or system enhancements.
Analytical, Functional, and Delivery Skills
- Ability to work cross-functionally with HR, Payroll, Finance, and IT teams.
- Strong process analysis, workflow documentation, and testing execution skills.
- Experience troubleshooting production issues and driving root-cause resolution.
- Ability to support integration testing, regression testing, and user acceptance testing.
- Strong communication skills and ability to partner with non-technical stakeholders.
Not Acceptable / Will Not Work
- Candidates without any UCPath experience.
- Candidates with only basic or surface-level SQL.
- Candidates lacking HR and Payroll functional background.
- Candidates requiring extended time off at onboarding.

- Supporting system implementations with documentation and training.
- Leading or participating in cross-functional initiatives to improve system effectiveness.
Generic Scope This is a senior-level technical analyst role requiring recognized expertise within the field. The work frequently involves unique, complex issues requiring analytical judgment and a high degree of autonomy. The position may lead initiatives, formulate strategies, and contribute to policy or process improvements.
Custom Scope The Business Systems Analyst is a key member of the HR Technology and Functional IT team. The Analyst:
- Provides analytical, functional, and operational support for Oracle Cloud and UCPath-adjacent systems.
- Partners with HR, Payroll, and Operations stakeholders to assess business processes and define system requirements.
- Creates documentation, workflows, specifications, and testing frameworks.
- Leads system testing efforts including integration and UAT.
- Resolves complex production issues, ensuring data integrity, continuity, and compliance.
- Supports ongoing enhancements, configuration, and optimization across HR systems.
- Provides strategic insights on HR technology trends and process optimization.
- Contributes to the development and maintenance of the broader HR system architecture supporting recruiting, onboarding, performance, learning, compensation, talent management, and workforce administration.
Department Overview The Business Informatics and Analysis department provides essential support for enterprise systems across the organization. Key responsibilities include:
- Serving as the primary liaison between business and technology units.
